Faulty Geil Memory?????

I purchased MY-058-GL Geil 2GB PC6400c4 800Mhz Ultra Low Latency in November 2006. Since purchase I have had problems. I had noticed that I was getting more and more problems with apps and some BSD. I then tested the memory with "Memtest86 v1.70" and within 6mins it had recorded 500+ errors.

Can anyone tell me where I stand with the memory as they are faulty? If I have to RMA what do I do (RMA to OC)? I was considering these Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-5300C3 667MHz Tenth Anniversary as replacement as I dont trust the Geil memory? Any help would be apprieciated.

My system:
Motherboard: Asus P5N-E SLI
CPU: Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 and Zalman CNPS9700
PSU: Enermax Noisetaker 600W
Graphic Card: BFG 7800GTX 256MB

TIA HT

Always had Crucial Memory and never had any trouble, order online, deliverys next day, and are very well packaged in there own tri-wall memory box.. ;)

Would it be conclusive using Memtest86 that the memory is faulty  If so would I have to RMA it to OC and could I change it for the Crucial memory plus the extra cost

500+ errors within 6 mins is bad... very bad.

From what i know of it (and i'll admit, i dont know much) the standard test is to let it run for 8 or so hours overnight... so errors within 6 mins to me means your ram is junk.

I would RMA it.

Just to check and save time. You have the Vdimm set at 2.1V in the BIOS - you'll need it to get 4-4-4-12. If you do you can raise it to 2.3V to see if that helps.

cheers

Tried the memory at 4-4-4-12 with voltage at 2.259v as this was the highest setting I could use without going over the limit...... still no joy :( Who would I get in touch with  Would it be Overclocker and ask for an RMA?

I had probs with my geil DDRII PC5300 2*1GB

I bought it because it was on This week only (last august) I guess it was just a faulty batch that came in hence all the threads at the moment.

I RMAed it 2 weeks ago to OC and I mailed them yesterday they said it went back to suppliers for a replacement and it was a 28 day wait :(

Reading about geil customer service on various forums I am not holding my breath. If you don't have any replacement ram I suggest buying some as you are in for a long wait. The just sell the Geil as new on fleabay.

Not the fault of OC mind you and it's good that you can have them deal with your Faulty goods and confirm which is why I shop with them.) Here in Belgium most electronics retails say all goods must be sent back to makers not the shop.

Try actually dropping the voltage.

I had a problem with MY-058-GL Geil 2GB PC6400c4 800Mhz which was rated at 2.1v

My results from changing the voltage

VMem 2.1v - a few errors in memtest over long periods
VMem 2.2v - 15k errors in 15 seconds
Vmem 2.0v - 0 Errors in 8 Hours

There were a few people who posted about Geil issues back in AUgust last year.
Mainly because the RAM was being sold at £105+vat for 2GB and everyone was buying it (I personally bought 4GB of the stuff as at that price I felt I'd be stupid not to).
A lot of the problems people were having was down to the "Safemode SPD" used on these modules.
Where they default to 1.8v @ 667Mhz whereas they are advertised as 2.1v @ 800Mhz.
Once the changes were made manually in the BIOS they usually turned out to be OK with only a few people genuinely having faulty RAM (My 4x 1GB sticks from Auguest have been 100% fine).

Hope everything gets sorted for you.

What mobo are you using bassets?

yeah but coupled with a budget mobo (asrock dualvsta) you had no memory voltage functions in the bios (well you had HIGH/MEDIUM/LOW) but no voltages listed next to them so no way to know what voltage you were putting on your memory.

Mine definitely was faulty as 1 stick worked fine but the other didn't.

Bfar it's a ABit AW9D-Max

Only made the change to 2.0v late last night, But so far it seems very happy with that setting. Memtest86+ ran for 8+ hours and Orthos Prime(Blend) 5hrs+.

Cheers man, I had a similar prob last night, but I've never tried 2.0v, didn't even consider it. There's another lad knocking around here who found the same solution on his P5B, so i'll give it a blast.

Still a little peeved to find the sticks don't run at their rated settings
OCUK is selling this stuff off for a reason - there are faulty parts in the batches.

surprise surprise another faulty geil pc6400 set, i too had the same problems mine wer pretty much borked on arrival and defaulted to 5-5-5-18 and wouldn't run stock timings on stock speeds, did a memtest and 1 of the sticks turned out to be DOA, so RMA'd the ram picked up some Team Xtreme and all is well :D

On the mobo in my sig I was getting errors on what I thought was stock.

I reset all the bios default memory settings, set DDR800, set the voltage at 2.1, set ONLY the 4-4-4-12 values, and everything tests pefectly now. I'm over clocked to 3.2 using 400x8, so my memory is still at stock on a 1:1 divider.

I must have changed one of the other fiddly timing values somewhere along the way, duh  I recommend only changing the above values on this mobo/mem, leave all other values at their defaults. Let face it 99.99% of us are far too lazy to find out what all these little settings actually mean. If you don't know, don't change it.
