Faulty GTX 580? Help plz :)

Come now guys, even a duff brand PSU could handle a 580, you guys make it sound like a 580 draws 500 watts.

Your problem sounds odd though, I'd be extremely surprised if the card had a problem. When you said you tried your dads PSU, did you put the PSU in your PC or try the card in his?

Tried it in his. he has used a gtx 275 for the past 2-3 years.

Hmm, not using the same cable to connect it to your dads monitor as your own by any chance?

Do you hear if the PC boots into windows, hdd noise or anything?

Yea...because cheap generic PSU are guaranteed to deliver stable clean power over the 12v rail(s) as well as the output it claims to deliver, and people are idiots for paying loads more for good branded PSU

Put your best foot forward and consider a quality, branded PSU. One of the best moves you'll ever make when selecting PC components.

Nah using different cable to connect to monitor.

Also i hear the hard drive running, and it sounds just what it sounds like now (With my gtx 260 in) i havnt listened for windows welcoming sound yet, but im pretty sure that its booting into windows

You are putting TWO power plugs into the gtx right? it sounds like you have put the 8pin in but you don't mention the 6pin, unless Im reading it wrong. the gtx needs both. if possible can you please upload a top down picture of your pc with it on its side and side panel off with everything fitted so we can see the power cables going into mobo and card.

Hmm so by the sounds of it, most of you reccomend me buy a Quality PSU before sending the card back?
Let me put it this way...generic PSU and GTX580 shouldn't even be in the same sentence, unless the sentence is saying DON'T put the two together in the same PC.

The thing is if you RMA the GTX580 back for testing and no fault is found, the etailer might charge you for their time. Even if putting the graphic card aside...with fairly high-end platform such as i7 you shouldn't risk it on a generic PSU. If the PSU does go pop, there's a chance that it would take the rest of the hardware along with it.

If you have no plan on sending your i7 system to early grave, you should definitely consider replacing the PSU with something decent instead. Even I replaced my Arctic Power 700W despite it was still working. A decent PSU will having higher efficiency, meaning it will reduce the amount of power draw from the wall socket thus save of electricity bill, as well as reducing the wasted heat generated.

Lol of course im using an 8 pin and 6 pin :P i know everything is plugged in correctly, like i said. im on my new machine right now typing this.. im using my gtx 260 right now. but yes i know what your saying about my psu is crap. ive already considered buying a decent corsair PSU,

Fixed. the card is Fine!. the 6 to 8 pin converter we bought was wired incorectly. it had only 4 earths connected so we did a bit of soldering, pc now displays with the gtx 580 :) didnt let it boot into windows becuase it would get mixed up with my 260 drivers. using the 260 at the moment, im thinking about not puting the 580 back into the machine before i buy a new power supply. is it really worth it? this 700 watt arctic power i thought should do the job? the only difference is the brand name, ive ran a 260 in this machine for years now and it hasnt had any faults at all, its been perfect. who thinks i should still upgrade, and why??

GTX580 consume 89W extra in Crysis and nearly 155W extra in furmark comparing to GTX260:
