hi
after testing my system through orthos it still crashes on the first time i boot. rebooting solves this. could this be due to the power supply and how would you check if your power supply is good?

yes the system is overclocked to 2.4ghz.
orthos runs fine. its just that say if i turn pc of at night and then come back to it in the morning. it will take 2 restarts to get it fully working. on the first one it will crash after i've logged on. on the second it will be fully working

power supply is q-tec 350w. is there a way to check if this is giving enough power?

It may very well be the power supply looking at that, but don't do anything until others have backed me up on that :P

Q-tec psu's are just about the worst I've ever seen. A 350w one can usually only put out around 200w and they have very poor voltage rails. With overclocking its probably tipping it over the edge and I'd say it was most likely the cause of your trouble. (They are also well known for exploding in a big way and killing everything attached to them.)

anyone recomment a psu thats not too much and reliable or will i be better off looking for one of the major brands on the bay?

Any psu around 350w -400w from a decent brand such as Enermax, Antec or Tagan should be plenty for your spec and will be more reliable and efficient.

It will definately be the crappy abysmal Q-tec. No wonder you did'nt mention the brand in your first post.

The psu is the single most important component in your pc and it really does not pay to skimp on one.

Any of these should do you:-

Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.0 PSU - Black Nickel

Antec TruePower Trio 430W PSU

Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.0 PSU - Black Nickel with Blue LED Fan

Enermax Liberty 400W ELT400AWT ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU

Antec EarthWatts 430W PSU

All under £50 and fairly decent. Or maybe one of the OCUK Huntkey psu's but nobody really knows a lot about those.
