Groovin' @ the disco
I got a wierd issue with my ps2 where it will not read certain ps1 disks but will read everything else.

I makes a grinding noise when I try reading them, certain disks will read once and take it out and put it back in serveal times. But it seems that the drive on my so called limited edition silver PS2 (I was tricked into getting this from sony before they came out in the masses!!!) is not picking up the disc correclty therefore not spinning it up right and making the disc rattle, or my tray big and its rattling cause of this. I try playing around with the console configuration but it still does it.

anyone else had this beef? and solutions apart from buying the slim line silver one?

take the unit apart carefully, there should be a screw keeping the laser on the drive steady, tighten it up... worked for a friend of mine anyway lol.

just be careful when u take it apart, the cables to the controller ports are pretty short.

pop the top off, taking care not to tear the ribbon that goes to the power & reset buttons.

take of the plastic cover that is on top of the dvd drive (it is magnitized so there is a little resistance once youve taken the screws out)

clean the lens with a cotton bud and some mild alcohol

put it back together and test

8 out of 10 times it's a dirty lens

if u start playing with other stuff first you can totally bork it up

this is from my personal experience

i bought a dozen "broken" ps2's from cash converters last year

got half of them working just by cleaning the lens

made a killing on ebay ! :D

good luck

I pop the lid off - it was quite easy - the power and eject button remain on the main unit with mine.

The issue is/was that the rubber ring around the spinner had fuff on it so it wasn't gripping it correctly, I gave that a good clean along with the discs now it intermittly reads ps1 games. If a held the whiteish gripper on the top down it reads all the time, I try adding extra weight to it but doesn't make a difference :( , do you think its a case of just swapping the drive or is it worth taking apart a faulty dvd drive to see if I replaced the white thing on top resolves the issue for good.

yeah the white thing is part of the magnetic thing that actually grips the disc as it spins i think.

i would try and get another one to try

did u clean the lens when u had it open ?

Issue fixed - well sort of

I fixed the issue - I stuck stickers on the center of the discs that the console had an issue spinning up and it works, the wierd thing is that it works a lot quieter than its ever been!! :D I should have tried this before opening the thing up.

PS2 load failure...

I've had this problem for ages now.

My ps2 loads New games fine but wont load older ones i have, like GTA3 & Metal gear solid 2...

I tried the re-alligning method on the white jagged round cog part in the console but to no avail, i haven't yet tried cleaning the lens as no idea what type of Alcohol to use??? *** a tiny drop of vodka be ok to use?

*No laughing at my alcohol knowledge

Any help with this appreciated...

vodka is fine mate, thats usually what i use. head cleaning fluid is just mild alcohol :)

be sure to dry it with a dry cotton bud

slinxy: thats cool that you got it sorted, never heard of that method before lol

sounds like the stickers are actually helping the ps2 to grip the disc better

good find :D
