Psu

Greetings Folks

Does this sound like a faulty PSU or GPU?

When i load any game within seconds of the game going full screen the GPU turns off, Fan still spinning on it but nothing on screen.

It i hard reboot the system i can carry on until i load the next game.

Now at first I thought it might be the Gpu overheating so added new thermal paste and so on,

Using Gpu-z i can see the temps are not going above 55c so can not see it being a over heat protection issue on the Gpu.

I have tested a number of drivers and pcie slots all do the same thing.

After more testing I can play ok with no problems until I go into full screen and it utilises the second gpu more.
When in windowed mode uses gpu1 - 35 to 50%and gpu2 - 9%
Once in full screen both gpus get used 50 - 65%

I am running:
Asus Maximus IV Extreme
Intel Core i7-2600K 3.40GHz
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6990
G.Skill RipJawsX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz
Corsair Professional Series AX1200 High Performance 1200W

Kind Regards
Steven

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers? If not it is probably a bad card because that PSU could power another HD 6990 if you needed it too. If the drivers don't help try underclocking the card and seeing if that helps, if it does then it is certain the card is on it's way out.

Greetings,

Reinstalled the drivers a number of times, also done a full clean install of windows ( long over due )
I have under clocked and still the same, one in full screen it crashes,
But no issues no matter the clock speeds, graphic settings used if kept in window mode.

that card is power hungry so could be psu

does it pass cpu stress testing? and how much vccio/sa are you using? it will be the stock 1.05v one

might help with two/three clicks more from stock, can also test by underclocking the gpu core and memory by 200mhz and see if it takes longer to crash

Greetings

All voltages are default,
Also was able to run 2 benchmark valley one at 720 one at 1080
Both with low settings with 600 clock and 800 memory.

Both ran ok, put the clock up to 700 and it crashed,
Turned clock back down to 600 and crashed again.

Temps were fine, not going above 60/70

its hard to say,it could be psu and could be gpu idk

only way to be sure is to test with another if you can

Greetings folks,

Thanks for all the advice, towards the end of the month will be able to test both.
Will be taking my system to a friends and getting him to test my gpu and I will test his to check my psu.

Will post back once I can with any updates.

Try a different gpu pcie power cable as there could be a loose in the pins.

I got this problem a while back and It was caused by one of the pins in the 8 pin pcie cable not making proper contact thus the pc was shutting down when gaming.

You sir are a genius ;)
Changed over the 2 x 8pins and so far all ok,
Well other than me being a twit and breaking my mini dp adapter when moving the pc back lol

More testing to be done but thank you for the help dude made me a happy chap again ;):)

After further testing issue remains :-(

Driving me nuts now, first few runs temp got up to 95c no crashes,
Went out for an hour or so and came back ran another benchmark and temps holding at 80c then crash.

So drivers changed, system reinstalled, cables changed, pcie lanes changed, tested x 16 & 8

One thing i have noticed now is that in the bios "GPU.DIMM Post" screen it shows the card running at x8 some times and not x16
I have defaulted the bios and there is no change.

i doubt it should be goin over 75 degrees, maybe u have overheated the card in the past to the point of damaging the 3D element of the card,
Did u manage to test your friends gcard in your machine?
