Hi,

I bought some parts from ocuk ... amd phenom 2 x2 550, asus motherboard , 4gb ram, 320gb wd blue hd, 1tb wd green hd etc etc and the following psu.. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-026-OC&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=

Originally when i put it together i realised the psu only had 2 sata power sockets , i powered the dvdrw and the 320gb hd so i could install windows. Today i went to pcworld to get a splitter (one end a ide power socket , other end sata) so i could have a third sata power socket to power the 1tb hard drive.

Since doing this i have noticed a smell from the psu , almost like a mild burning/new smell

WHat could be the problem??

P.S No cables are loose.

The only thing I can really advise you to do is check all your connections etc. Also try and find the exact source and posistion of the smell and see if it is hot/burning...

Hi,

Checked all connections and they are fine. The smell seems to be coming from the power pack/motherboard area.

Surely this is powerful enough to power three sata devices (dvdrw and 2 hd)?

Matt

Unless it's an 'offensive' smell, I wouldn't be worrying about it. I think it is just that new component smell that Temi D is talking about.

And just to answer your last question, yes that PSU is more than strong enough to drive those devices. I have the same PSU powering an i7 920 setup and it's fine.

Could be you just didn't notice it? :)

I've ran a lot more equipment off of that PSU than you currently are and it won't be a problem for it. Could definitely be a little more load getting it a little warmer, but nothing to worry about I don't think :).

Aaargh its not smelt that bad during today but just come in from shopping and it smells again , as soon as i walked in the computer room i could smell it. (pc was on while i was out) Opened the case side and it smells like its coming from the power pack.

Matt

Probably not a good idea to leave the PC on whilst going out if your in any kind of doubt about the PSU. If it continues, I'd send it back and see if there's a fault with it.

Unfortunately Matt it now comes down to your own judgement call as to whether or not you believe this to be a fault. I'm afraid only you can smell whatever it is that your PC is producing.

Ultimately a new PSU isn't going to cost you a fortune if it's really worrying you.

Well its only a few days old from ocuk so if its faulty it would be replaced free wouldnt it?

Hi,

Ive tried a few times buit it just rings out (i only live 10 mins away so could always go there )

I have noticed since i reverted the overclock back to normal speed it isnt half as bad.

Why would that be?

Not working as hard I would assume. If in doubt use webnote or customer service forums
