faulty second hand vehicle. what can we do?

As already said, its £600, not £6k what did you really expect at this price point?

The clutch sounds like its not slipping to me, could well be a simple fix or just a trait of the car and its wear & tear, you should have checked it prior to buying, not after.

Take legal advice by all means to see if you have any realistic chance of getting anywhere in this, but, as to the answer, refer to your own user name.

fox. Don't lose site on the value of money to some users

£600 is a lot of money to me, and many other people here I'm sure. But it's practically throwaway money for a car - not the sort of money you spend in order to expect years of trouble-free motoring. You cannot expect to buy a pristine vehicle with no mechanical faults and no worn-out parts for this money, in most cases.

Sounds like much ado about nothing, £600 car, not inspected properly, dodgy home trader. Suck it up and fix any issues.

registered trader? sale of goods act
shady bloke buying and selling cars for a bit pocket money... nowt

As for the clutch.. mine is really heavy, when getting into other cars I sometimes have difficulty with the clutch if its dead light.

Are you sure your friend isnt mistaking differences in cars for a fault?

If their clueless about cars, but have a good mechanic friend who can state the cluth is knackered and she needs a new one then why not take him along to view any cars?

come on. we both know that's not what's been said here. reread the thread if you need clarification.

I agree

why not take him along to view any cars?

i'll let him know now i'm sure he can't wait to look at all the cars in the future she needs until she finds one she likes. And for free! great idea :P

unfortunately this family is just one of those familys that shouldn't be allowed to have vehicles as they all break and he's dealing with them all. he already does loads and there has to be times when they decide to try dealing with things themselves.

I think the moral of the story here is to test drive or at least have the sense to check the clutch works before buying a car for £600. I mean come on...

Not even a remote chance of getting anything out of the seller.

If this is what both you and the mechanic think, why does this thread even exist?

really if you don't know already there's unfortunately nothing we can do to help you.

What?

It's a used car with a potentially worn out consumable. Neither yourself nor your mechanic friend seem to care about this person's car nor their driving career.

I repeat, why does this thread even need to exist? Ignore the problem as it's not yours and you openly admit that you don't think she should own a vehicle anyway, and get on with your life

like i said, if you can't see why this thread exists then there's nothing i can do to help you. :D i make a thread asking for advice for this friend and you see it as an example of me not caring. and i say this mechanic friend does loads for this family and you see it as an example of them not caring about this person. haha
