Faulty sub? Which replacement speakers, Aego M or M-Audio?

Hi all,

When i first got my pc i bought some cheap 2.1 Philips speakers from OcUK (MMS231) which i found were pretty good.

However, recently the sub has started making a loud buzzing noise. The sound isn't emitted by the speaker itself but comes from something else within the subwoofer. It happens regardless of whether the speakers are turned on or not, so long as they're plugged into the mains. It doesn't happen all the time and when it does it lasts for a few hours. I take it that they're on their way out?

Another question i have is which speakers to replace them with. Having heard some M-Audio Studiophile DX4's in school i've decided that i want to get better speakers as i never knew that there can be such a difference in sound quality. I really like the sound of the DX4's but the Aego M's also appeal to me and are slightly cheaper.

I'm not worried about the lack of a sub on the DX4's as the bass still sounded pretty hefty. So for sound quality which set would be better?

Thanks :)

BTW i'm using an Audigy 4 soundcard.

It depends on what you want/need.

As I am not into gaming only muisc, I swapped my Creative 2.1 system for an amp and bookshelf speakers.

I bought a Sonic T-Amp (~ £30) and wired it up to some old Mission 73s which I had in the loft, and the improvement was very noticeable.

Now looking for better speakers. :(

Budget is £100 tops. I'll be using the speakers for music as i have headphones for gaming.

I take it that the Aego M's would be best suited to gaming and the M-Audio's for music?

Thanks for your replies

The Aego Ms are brilliant speakers for both games and music in my opinion. They're just about impossible to beat for the price. A proper amp and bookshelf setup would definitely sound better but probably cost a good bit more, so it really depends on how much you're willing to pay. I'm sure someone here will be able to give you a good spec on a hi-fi setup for £100, but I doubt you'll be disappointed if you go for the Aegos anyway.

I'm not too interested in a hi-fi setup, not enough room but i'll be looking into it in the future when i have a place of my own ;)

I'm finding the choice quite difficult, i've read many good reviews on both sets of speakers and can't really find a fault with either. I may end up going with the Aego M's as they're easier to get hold of, are cheaper and will take up less desktop space.

Just need to sort out the RMA for my current setup.

Thanks for your help guys, if anyone has had any experience with the M-Audio DX4's then i'd really like to know your opinion of them :)
