hi all,

got a pc here of a customer's... it has 4 faulty usb ports on the back panel - they won't show any signs of life whatsoever with various usb peripherals connected...

teh front two usb ports, however, do work...

only they only work with a keyboard and a mouse plugged in.

if i try to connect anything other than a kb and mouse (mouse and memory stick or kb and memory stick) the computer freezes - cursor won't move and i have to shut down...

Am I right in assuming that even if i format the hard drive and install windows again it will not fix the usb drives - as they are hardware inputs?

Boot in to linux from a usb stick and see if they still work then. If you can't even get that far, check BIOS settings. If that doesn't work, you are almost certainly looking at a hardware fault.
