Hey folks, I have been in our property coming up to 3 years, and my next water bill is due in a week or so (for the past year).
It started off with quite high usage, and so the following year my direct debits were increased to around £70 a month (3 bed semi / family of 4) as even though that year was considerably lower (worked out about £52 per month usage) I still had to pay an offset from the first year so it was easier to just raise the DD to £70.

However, since October last year we really have taken extra steps to save water usage, far FAR less time in the shower, dishwasher vs sink washing and everything is always taken into consideration when using the water, so much so, that I am expecting a far lower bill this time around, however, when I went to look at the meter a few weeks ago, it was blank / display was dead. I called the water company who sent an engineer a few days later who said its totally broke and they will replace it soon, and they won't be able to get any readings from it.

Now, the issue there is, I have a feeling they are going to average my bill out from last years bill, which is not fair, as basically I have wasted all this time saving water for nothing - where would I stand here? Surely it's their fault as it's their meter that has broken, it's ridiculous as I genuinely wanted to see how well we had done this year with water usage saving, only for the sodding meter to be broken!!!

Have you tried actually asking the water company how they'll work it out? They may just write it off as it's their faulty equipment.

I had exactly the same issue in a new build, the meter so it turns out was not working from day 1.

They finally fixed it 2 years later and all i saw for those first 2 years was the standing charges! I quite enjoyed paying £8pm for my water (even that had put me massively in credit!)

Provider was Southern Water.

I will give them a call tomorrow, I had a look at their website and their 'average user yearly bill is £495' for 3 bed, and low user £343.
Obviously I don't mind paying a certain amount, so hopefully they will come up with a decent enough total, or, as said above, write it off or charge only standing charge...

I was on an unmetered connection paying £50 a month.

I requested a meter and now the monthly DD is £15 per month.
