Hi,

Please can you help me,

I apologise for the really long message, but i wanted to post as much information as possible to see if you could help me with finding out if my wireless card is faulty or to choose a new router instead?

I am having terrible trouble trying to get a wireless connection to the internet on my PC, which is upstairs. Up until about 2 months ago the connection was reasonably good and allowed me to stream online sports without too much problem - all over the house including the garden. But since then the connection has got progressively worse.

I am now at a stage where i can't access the internet about 95% of the time; i can get a connection, but it won't load a web page and just shows it continually loading. During this i haven't seen any disconnects with the task bar network icon. On the odd occasion that i can access the internet, it is very slow and takes forever to load a page.

My PC is the furthest away from the router in the house, which is a fairly large modern constructed detached house. Other Wi-Fi usage for upstairs are 2 tablets, 2 Xbox 360's, 3 mobiles and 1 laptop, not on all at the same time. These are all slower than previously, although my kids 360's run fine for multiplayer but that could be because their rooms are directly over the router. I also have my TV and Xbox one hard wired into the router downstairs.

I am on Sky fibre unlimited, using the SR102 router and a Asus wireless PCE-N53 in my PC that i built. I bought the Asus card about 6 months ago as i was having trouble connecting with my old Netgear WG311T wireless card. I am also aware of the Wi-Fi problems that the SR102 has and was kind of anticipating this happening at some point.

I have contacted Sky a lot about this and although generally very helpful they have been unable to fix it. I have gone through the usual things; changing channels, resetting the router, a new router (which made no difference) and BT out to check the line which was ok. Finally Sky have concluded that they cannot improve my Wi-Fi and thus have waived my early cancellation fee if i decide to go elsewhere for a ISP.

So my questions please;

1.
I am starting to wonder if my wireless card may be faulty. Is there any way i could check to see if it is?

2.
After reading this forum i was also considering replacing the SR102 with one of the following all in one routers. I think i now how to extract the information i need from the SR102, but i need a little more help please:

3. Asus DSL AC68U
Can i use the latest Asus firmware to access Sky or do i need to use merlin?

4. Netgear D7000 nighthawk
Am i right in saying that i only need the latest Netgear firmware to set up sky, thus no need for a third party firmware?

5.
Will they both work on sky without any additional hardware?

6.
Which one do you recommend please (i have read a lot here that the Asus is not so good)?

7.
Getting another router is an expensive option, do you think it will really improve my Wi-Fi signal regarding my house size?

8.
Will both of these work with streaming an online sports channel (MLB.TV)?

9.
I think i read somewhere that iphones have trouble connecting to the Netgear? is this correct for both routers?

10.
Is there anything else i can try before going down the route of spending a lot of money?

My only other option is to run a cable from my router to my PC, but i am not keen on doing this as i haven't really got anywhere to hide it. The cable will also be reasonably long running it along the skirting to my PC!

Over the weekend i might put back in the Netgear card and see if it makes any difference. I will let you know how i get on.

Sorry for the long message, i wrote it offline and was waiting for a good connection so that i could copy and paste it into the forum when I got the chance!!

Thank you in advance.

I didn't change the wireless card, but moved my PC forward by about 1 foot so that I could plug an Ethernet cable in the back. Then used the Sky recovery tool to reset the original router via the Ethernet cable. Set up this router downstairs but slightly forward of the old position. As a result I got about 20% increase with my wireless signal. When I put my PC back into its original position I then lost about 10% signal!! But this signal is now fluctuating rather than staying at about 40% previously.

Maybe this is a location problem rather than signal? The strength seems to be fluctuating between 48% - 60%, anything below about 50% and the internet becomes very slow. I have yet to update the drivers for the Asus wireless card, which is this mornings job.

I am still thinking about a new router though - which do you recommend?

Cheers.
