Faulty X99-S ?

Have been running this board for a few months - it replaced one that was faulty (USB 3 issues):(

Every now and then it would not boot up but after a re-start it usually worked ; found the ssd (500gb 840 evo) and booted .
In failed attempts the lights come on and all appears in order BUT the board does NOT start (it never gets to the point of reading the ssd!) and it switches itself off (further usually if you ask it to restart it does not it simply powers down , lights and fans stay on but it switches itself off

Today it took 3 attempts before it started!!

Have had enough; I am now of the view that all Asus X99 boards are flawed & my board is garbage. Very disappointing for a board costing in excess of £200

Anyone got any ideas as to how to sort this? Anyone had similar issues?

I do not want to have to rma - again - the first time took at least 4 weeks - and I have doubts that ANY Asus X99 (-S in particular) will work as they should.

Would mention that I was an Asus fan but not anymore!

Rant over - thoughts?

Sounds like a usb issue on start up (POST). What have you got plugged into the USB and which version of the USB ports are you using ?

Try it with only the keyboard and mouse in the USB V2 ports right at the top of the back plate the 1st 2 black ports.

See if that helps.

If not try another mouse and keyboard if you have one or try booting without anything in the USB. Also make sure the USB settings and initialization for USB are set right in the BIOS under the boot area.

It is clocked - cpu to 4.2

PSU is a 1000w Super flower Platinum model.

Will try swapping 2 or 3 of the usb connections at the back - the problem with the old board was the usb 3 connectors - it did not like you to use them!

Will think it through as I need one usb 3 connector for the keyboard - it's the Gigabyte Osmium.

Ok make sure all usb ports in the BIOS are fully initialized at POST and not set to partial as they are at default. Also are you using the latest BIOS for your motherboard ? If not make sure to check for a newer one as X99 are getting BIOS updates all the time to weed out some of the issues that they originally had. They are very stable now on the newer versions of their BIOS's.. At first they had some teething problems with the BIOS for RAM and other issues. They cleverly don't even mention what they fixed and just say stability issues were fixed in the newer BIOS's. It's normal with every platform really.. Just X99 seemed to be released a bit too early I think before they weeded out the common issues people had with hardware compatibility, that's why I waited for the newer boards not the original ones too.

If the system boots fine without the mouse and keyboard and any other usb device connected then it's a compatibility issue with one of your usb devices, also remember if you have internal usb connected to anything that can cause the same issues eg corsair LINK uses a usb internal header and may trip the POST or any other device connected to the internal USB headers. Just start with the least components and work up one by one to see what trips it and then figure out if moving it to a different version of the USB eg v2 , v3 & v3.1 helps. Just start logically trouble shooting mate. The Asus boards are pretty good even the earlier ones, just make sure to run the latest BIOS and set to defaults and work from there. Don't overclock yet until the basics are stable. Also if you have quick startup on in the BIOS try disabling that as a test too.

It's really difficult to help in these situations when you don't list everything connected to the PC on USB (also what ports they are connected to and version) and the full specs of the PC and screenshots of the BIOS settings you have.

I've had a problem like this on my msi x99s sli plus, I updated my bios to v1.9 it fine now. so I suggest updating your bios, it is my first go to thing for this stuff.
good luck

Is the memory overclocked? XMP or anything? failure to POST is often overclocking related. Try resetting everything to stock speeds and see how it goes.

Have updated the Bios. Will see how it goes.
The memory is geil 2666 and I have been using xmp + cpu at 4.2 -will keep an eye and let you know how it goes.
Thanks to all who have inputted to date.:)

Have just set the ram via xmp - restarted and have clocked the cpu to 4.2 - did notice that whereas before when I ran the ram at its speed of 2666 via xmp , the board amended , automatically, the base clock to 125 (so multiplier was 33/34) it now leaves it at 100 (and multiplier is standard 42).

With some luck it will hopefully be the case that the boards 'problems' will be gone - fingers crossed !

Just for the record, I've been running an X99-S for over a year now, rock solid and not a single problem. I have heard others with issues though.

Do not wish to tempt fate but the glitch I was getting does appear to have gone.
Bios update did the trick I believe.
Thanks to all who contributed.:)
