Following on from the "best cover ever" thread, which I completely misunderstood, I present to you the "Best album cover artwork" thread :D

Simply post your favorite album covers, I want to see whatcha got! Some reasoning is appreciated. It can be purely based on the artistic efforts of the cover, the skill of the photography or something that rings a bell with you - maybe it relates to the music.

Mine's probably The Beastie Boys - Licensed to ill.

The front.........

Then you open up the album....

I like it simply for the impact - when you actually open it up and see the complete image, it was not what I expected and just made me laugh! Typical Beastie :)

When I was young, my uncle covered an entire wall with an airbrushing of this one:

I later reproduced it on a 3' x 4' piece of card stock and currently have it hanging behind my bar.

For some reason, I still catch myself staring at this album cover:

Probably has something to do with the wizard. I don't know why. ;)

Finally, there are way too many to go into, but Iron Maiden covers are always interesting. Derek Riggs is a helluva artist, and he buries little signs and symbols everywhere in his artwork. Covers inside and out are always worth paying attention to.

Good topic! :)

Early Carcass covers.

They're still used as a Censorship and prosecution case study in universities today.

The best artwork for me was Eminem's Encore, despite being a very dissapointing album. You get to see he is holding something behind his back...

Heres the boxset version which contained the artwork on seperate pieces of paper, which I own:

Wasn't expecting it, and it gave me a slight shock :)

Isn't that at the end of one of the tracks where he shoots everybody or something?
Yep, its on the last track of that album. And what a bad album it is.

Edit - Its actually also *kind of* on the last song of 'The Marshall Mathers lp', Criminal. Not sure which one you are thinking of.

The Beastie Boys and Iron Maiden artwork are both excellent, I like a lot of the psychadelic stuff, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Grateful Dead, Steve Miller Band.

My favourite is possibly this:

It was one of the first albums I bought and the artwork was pretty invigorating to my 10 year old self. My best mate and I both planned to get the skulls tattoo'd onto our arms as soon as we looked 18. I was Slash he was going to get Axl.
