Favourite Guitar Solo's?

I discovered 2 days ago that I could connect my usb turntable to my amp (RTFM) and the first vinyl track I played was this (Fleetwood Mack Live) and yes, it almost brought tears etc........

what a coincidence, i was listening to go your own way (live) by fleetwood mac recently. although, i did then put on back and to the left by texas is the reason when the old man had stopped farting about with the record player...

Finally!!!!! Voted best solo of the decade for the 80's by Guitar World magazine. In fact pretty much any solo played by Eddie Van Halen is God like. Lol'd at the person who said Final Countdown by Europe.

Wasn't the story behind the solo on the song that Van Halen owed Quincy Jones a favour so he did the solo for him at zero cost/royalties.

I heard it somewhere, don't have a source. I bet he was gutted if that is true :D

Not quite. Quincy Jones rang him up and asked if he would be interested in doing it. The rest of the band were against him doing things outside of the band but he went and did it anyway. Had a quick listen to Beat it, laid down 2 solo's and let them pick which one they wanted. But you are right he didn't get a penny for his work.

# Metallica - Fade to Black
# Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
# Judas Priest - Painkiller

Too many more to list

Steppenwolf - The Pusher
Buddy Guy - She's Got the Devil in Her (Legendary, seriously, the man talks with a guitar)
The Raconteurs - Blue Veins
White Stripes - 300 M.P.H Torrential Outpour Blues
Hendrix (Band of Gypsy's) - Machine Gun
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms.

A guitar solo is not just meaningless noise as has been stated in this thread, when done by a lead guitarist who isnt the frontman, a good solo truly takes over from the singing, continues it. When done by the singer, it replaces his voice, continues the song. There are many many more than I have posted, but its a good little selection.

Opeth - Ghost of Perdition (Tasty, Subtle, give the song a real 'southerny' feel, minimal)
Oasis - Rock'n'Roll Star (Extremely Simple, but expertly crafted. Melodic simplicty at it's best (Play it for yourself!!!))
Pantera - Walk (Mental)
Satriani - Echoes (some lovely phrases here, also at the end of Alwyas With Me, Always With you)
Nirvana - In Bloom (what's going on here then/)

Each to their own :) Personally the 3 times I have seen Jack White live he has been very good, he plays guitar without apparant effort, which is a skill in itself.

Admittedly his foray into Blues is only just really beginning, but he is rapidly improving as a guitar player to the point he has become a highlight whenever he picks one up.

I chose that specifically as in much of the older white stripes stuff, he is just not that great with the guitar, while with that specific song he has really picked up his game. Admittedly he is still apeing the masters, but hey, thats how people who arn't improve. There are some really nice riffs in that song, and he shows that he is really getting to grips with how long to hold a note and how to meld it all together into a cohesive sound.

Any reason for your hate? :)
