Ah for the good old days of skaven/fairlight/purple motion making game soundtracks
Games like Starcraft, Quake 2, MechCommander, Unreal Tournament, Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit, commandos beyond the call of duty, etc. all had epic soundtracks that perfectly fit the game.
There are some very, very good tunes in this thread. Especially from the F-Zero games, and Ave Maria from Hitman: Bloody Money (which annoyingly wasn't on the CD of the games music I bought).
However, there is better, and this I shall now put this forth for your pleasure:
Super Nintendo Final Fantasy 3 (6). Its successor has CD based, synthesised music, but I think given the limitations of the SNES's sound hardware this was much more impressive.
