I've always been a bit of a fan of The Big Sleep but haven't really seen anyone with a favourite older movie in their list. Is there anyone here who prefers classic movies like this or any in their list/top-5?

One of the best films of all time for me would be 12 Angry Men, not a particularly promising sounding premise - a jury debating a trial, in one room for more or less the whole film but the dialogue and strength of performances make it riveting.

Lavinder Hill Mob,
The Lady Killers,
The Man in the White Suit...

Any of the Ealing Comedies!!!... Especially with Sir Alec in!..

Where to start? There are so many!

Arsenic & Old Lace
Harvey
Inherit The Wind
To Kill A Mockingbird
The Apartment

Fantastic movies. If only modern films could be half as good!

not sure if it is regarded as a classic in the same way as Casablanca, but it's old and I like it.

That Obscure Object of Desire - Buñuel

.

IMHO most of the classic movies are better than the majority of the present day crop. A few of my favourites (way too many to list):

The Third Man
North By Northwest (in fact practically any Hitchcock movie)
Dirty Harry (a bit more modern but still a classic)
The Apartment
The Great Escape
etc...

The older films have the advantage in that someone actually wrote a script.
Now they spend more on marketing than they do on actually having a storyline.

Modern films sell on hype......older movies had to have merit to succeed.

Good call on The Apartment and 12 Angry Men.......excellent choices.

I don't watch many old movies. I like North By Northwest though if that counts, and I liked The Hustler too if that counts.
