Faxing US for UK: What number/dialing code?

Hi,

Related to an earlier post this evening I am trying to send a fax to someone in the US.

They have given me their fax number as a 10 digit number (excluding and international dialing code), e.g. 888-888-8888.

What number should I type into the fax. I have tried what I though it would be, but to no avail; the number is not recognised.
