I was just wondering if anyone had any experience/thoughts on this: http://www.fdmacademy.com/

Learn 'for free' (excluding living expenses etc), then £20k year 1, £25k year 2.

It appeals to me as I would like to get into software engineering, but I don't have much experience (at all), especially in 'recent languages' viz java/.net/c#.

Maths/Physics graduate, currently doing a PhD.
CV
sorry, another CV! :p

Should I be aiming for more than £20k with a PhD, even given my relative lack of official software experience?

Personally, i'd say with a PhD you really should be aiming for £25k+
Although, I don't actually know what the job market it like for PhD graduates.
Have you thought about working for a university?

I can't imagine that the pay would be too good from a university either? Maybe that is just the lecturers...

I don't want to continue research/academia if that is what you mean.

I'd have thought that with a PhD you'd really be aiming to get into a specialist area. You're more than qualified I assume.

The area of research isn't accessible through industry tbh. It's either academia or nothing. I'm just after using my PhD as proven ability in identify and solving problems etc. Obviously there is a fair amount of computing in solving complex mathematical problems.

Looking back, maybe I shouldn't have started the PhD and instead should have gone straight for this academy type of thing, but I really didn't feel like joining the rat-race at that time.
