Well its not even released yet and there is a downloadable working version*.

Is there any point at all putting anti piracy measures on pc games anymore? Surely they just aggravate paying customers.

What do you think?

*Do not email me, i will not give you any details or help, this topic is about piracy and anti piracy measures.

Piracy will never be stopped unless someone comes up with an ingenious anti piracy system that's impossible to crack (which I doubt).

Crackers/hackers see it as a new challenge to break these new DRM systems and get a game/program working without the need for a valid license. They enjoy it and they'll spend every hour they can trying and trying until they crack the software.

I hate the fact that the only people who get screwed by this are the developers and the people like myself who pay the full price for these games. DRM doesn't stop piracy at all (look at Spore, most downloaded game ever, and long before this game we never had DRM) yet developers still insist on implementing it, screwing the paying customer over. It's disgusting.

DRM sucks balls. All it harms are the people who actually pay!!

From previous experience, I have seen 90% of offline games (as in dont need a genuine serial) cracked and online before UK release.

Not saying I actually illegally download them - I would get banned from uni internet!

Thanks for the info ! :).

Edit, indeed, you need to wait till release till playing it, appears it's simply a rip of the pre loaded data from steam.

It makes it worse that you can preorder a game and crackers get it before it's even sent out to you, AND for free.

DRM is largely pointless now, it gets cracked in a matter of days regardless of how good it is, and is available on the interweb days before the game is out in shops. Even starforce, the most horrible of invasive DRMs was cracked eventually. And AFAIK, it caused a ton of people to boycott any product with starforce.

I still say that one of the biggest issues is severe lack of game demos! A game is a big investment, if I'm going to spend £25 of my cash on something I better be damn sure I'm getting my moneys worth. No way I'm buying a game until I can see first hand how well it runs and how well it plays on my system, even if that means I have to download it.

Less DRM also means less friggin cd swaps. It infuriates me that I have to keep a disk in the drive at all times to play some games, BF2142 is the main culprit as there isn't even a mini image! I had to repair my disk with toothpaste last year because it was too scratched up for the drive to read, all because it has to be kept in the drive.

The bf2 mini image is brilliant!

I like games like Oblivion, no an annoying CD check to play it so I can install then don't have to mess around with disks. Also I can let my brother play it as he pleases as no restrictions (like DRM or one instance running at once like steam).

DRM is getting so ridiculous it can now often be quicker to pirate a game. For instance Fallout 3 Add on and Games for Windows Live, had a mate who downloaded off torrent and had it running in minutes, I had to download windows live, install, sign up, download patch etc etc

There is no hack/crack out for said game, downloaders still cant by pass online activation. *yet* /rolleyes

You obviously don't have the same access as i do.

Since IF i wanted to, i could download the entire game and play it now.

Trust me, there is a working crack.

I wonder if i post that i was being completely sarcastic here how many people won't read it, quote me, assume i was being deadly serious, and reply in shock and awe at my comments :D Dear god, i know sarcasm is hard to convey over text but cmon!

What about shifting the the focus to "is it the developers fault for making bad games" that results in piracy?

I know that spore was the most downloaded game ever, but why was it, its because it was simply the worst game created.

Are pc users/gamers so used to "mature/harder/more polished" games that inferior games aren't worth there money?

Same.......luckily I rented the great escape on ps2 rather than buying it. I would have been seriously hacked off if I had paid £40 for that peice of crap (we are talking a few years ago here).

Same........

Problem is if they release demos for EVERY game developed, you'll see a trend of them making the age of conan mistake.

The trial versions 20 levels are the best content in that entire game.

Whats not to say developers will cram everything into making the demo amazing and the game being a pile of tripe?

I preordered driv3r for the ps2. Put me off preordering for life. God that game was terrible. £40 down the drain.
