FEAR 2 retail sound problems/fix/patch help

I've played through a few levels of the retail game and the sound isn't right! This isnt an acceleration issue.

I can hear my gun sounds and movement to an extent but it seems to me like it's missing the deeper sounds.

I CANT hear enemy sounds or guns, or any explosions. Not sure what else i'm missing cos i cant hear it :eek:

I have trawled the internet for fixes for this. I dont get crashes or error messages, just missing sounds as above. I tried the K-Lite codec pack and tweak tool to no avail and turning off sound acceleration, disabling/enabling codecs. On my gf's PC the demo load screens have sound but once I get to the menu/game no sound at all (possibly a different issue).

So I guess my question is has anyone resolved this issue or is there any news of an upcoming patch?!

Edit: using X-Fi Xtreme Music and latest drivers for XP32.

You don't have a 5.1 system plugged in do you? It sounds like the peripheral sound channels are getting cut out.

no I have tv speakers and amp speakers plugged in using a Y splitter at the soundcard so it's just 2.0 sound (previously same issue on 2.0 speakers and headphones thru Y splitter). Maybe i'll try without the Y splitter to see if it makes a difference but i doubt it. I tried turning on 5.1 sound in sound and audio devices and turning it off (fix posted in various places) but no joy

Many people seem to be having no sound or reduced sound issues with this game. Shame cos i really want to get into it!! Unbelievable a game can be released with this sort of bug. Maybe i'll try reinstalling the game and sound drivers (again!)...
