There are so many webhosting companies, and providing some extra facilities and discounts.
Can any one explain me what should be the main features of a good web hosting company so that I keep these points in mind, while choosing a web hosting company for my site?
 
customer service would be high on my priority list...........
i eventually went with 1and1 after their support people helped me out with various questions and has been a good solid service ever since......
also consider how much web space, traffic allowance, emails and other features are included in your package.

I use MediaTemple, been with them for a couple of years and very impressed with the service. Their new Grid Server product is pretty good value for money, and you get more than you will probably ever need in terms of bandwidth and storage. (100GB storage 1TB bandwidth/month).
 
MediaTemple is in america though. Not the best if its going to be used primarily by british/european people. It's cheap for what you get though.

As said Customer support is a must and also high uptime. It all completely depends on what your going to use it for. A download website? Then space and bandwidth, just a normal website or forum then less space but more bandwidth. etc

Name me some better web hosting service providers in UK.
 
Support is very important and often overlooked; you don't want to just be hung out to dry when something goes wrong.

Other than that, it depends what you're planning on using it for really. If you want to host a business website on it then you'll want reliability and speed above all else, e.g. minimum downtime, low latency, etc.

If you just want a personal website to put your stuff on then reliability will probably take a back seat to actual disc space, bandwidth, and additional features. In this case I'd recommend Dreamhost above all others; you get huge amounts of space and bandwidth, lots of extra features, including shell access, and they have very friendly and helpful customer support (plus an entire staff/customer maintained support wiki) :)
 
Vidahost are really cool. It's the only one I've ever had tbh - but I've never had cause to look for another. They are just great.

It's important for me to get good service, even if it's a few pounds more than the cheapest rungs of hosting. Vidahost have helped me out no end, I must manage about 30 or so sites with them.

UK server, loads of bandwidth, and great support.

Please don't go with 1and1...

Support is the MOST important thing with hosting, and latency second.
