Ok, I thought it would be teething problems as it only became live in March ish time in Gosport but Sky has been up and down with slow connection speeds and random drops lately almost every day - connects now at 6.4MB (did start off at 9 then settled at 8 and now less...)

I see NTL have a £29/month offer ending today for 20MB - I am about to sign up with them again.

BAH.

I guess you are right there heh - I wonder if BE* would be worth considering? their site says a weeks downtime is expected whilst they re provision your exiting ADSL line - really a week? I could not manage that as I work from home too!

I don't have cable down my road - we only just got gas!

Virgin ADSL has been awful recently, but it's been rather speedy today.

*touches wood desk* :D

hmm I will actually buy a new router first as if I choose BE then a new router would be needed anyway and the DG834GT interface crashes a lot... will have info back!

Code:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6432 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.0 db 23.5 db
Noise Margin 13.1 db 14.0 db

these have not changed since the line went live..

I wouldn't rush to much with virgin media's offer, that offer has been rolled over since June reason i know is we moving so i been keeping a eye on it, i will be surprised if its not on next month too

you ungrateful sod :)i am lucky to get 3meg usually only 2 meg.Stop whingeing and be grateful for the extra speed over what i have got.i would love to get a fast connection like yours even with the dropouts
(the above comments are meant in fun,but with just a bit of seriousness :) )

13.1 noise margin not very good, I couldn't get more than 1.5 meg on ADSL (12 noise margin) without dropouts due to our manky line, now got Virgin 4 meg & it never varies, trifle expensive tho

You can't just look at the noise margin on an ADSL Max line as an absolute figure and say it is good or bad as it varies according to the sync and the target set for it.

13.1dB with an 8128 sync would be excellent, in this case 13.1 with a 6432 sync suggests a line that has had a 12dB or possibly 15dB target set so it would be sync'ing at the maximum 8128 if it wasn't for some quality issues on the line.
In BE terms a 38dB line would normally be expected to deliver around 9-12Mb but if there are line quality issues as the margin target might suggest then perhaps a bit lower.

Can only tell for sure by trying it.

Well BE have said I can expect 9-12MB - for £25 a month It's not going to be worth the extra few MB - if this continues I will just get Virgin media back on as we used to have it before moving to SKy.

Hmmm

Now that's an offer!

does anyone know if the BeBox is any good? I require a wireless-G router minimum with IP reservation and portforward capabilities

As expected for a free router (though they ask for it back or ask you to pay for it when you leave), it's pretty ropey - though at the better end of the scale. It's a rebranded Speedtouch (can't remember the model) with some changes to the firmware so you don't have to enter a username/password.

Are you on Sky's ADSL2+ service? Because if you are, they should be using seamless rate adaption...

As far as I am aware yes I should be on the ADSL2 service. I have raised a support ticket with them 24 hours ago so am waiting for a response. Thing is I really do like the Netgear DG834GT SKy give, it has just the features I need and does not cripple with torrents I find. The connection is just unstable at times!

I'm with BE and quite frankly the BeBox is terrible. I need to reset it around twice a day on average in order to keep it working smoothly. But thats just my experience, maybe I have a faulty one. The actual connection is great though, I get around 14mbps (never been lower than 13.5)

Ok, this morning Sky ADSL was, it came back up at about 12:20pm - enough is enough. I phoned up Virgin media and am now going to have 20MB cable as of Monday for £29/month. I also ordered a WRT54GL (had the 54G v2 before I got Sky for 3 years).

Looking forward to 20MB =] but most especially DD-WRT once again :D
