My PS3 wont play DVDs and instead it crashes with a black screen and I have to flick the power switch on the back of the console.

This would normally be ok as I can just send it back to sony, but this is the replacement they just sent me!!

I cant see where I'm goin wrong, it doesnt matter if upscaling is on or off, it just refuses to play DVDs. Not happy!

I've tried Team America, Baseketball, Blade 2, Rush Hour - all do the same thing

Anyone else had this issue before I ring sony to moan again?

The problem is it won't play crap films. Play something decent and it might work for you :p

Seriously though, it may just be faulty. Ring up Sony and get another replacement.

Its not a fault of the PS3, its a problem with the PS3 and your TV when playing DVDs. My first HDTV never had a problem but this one does, it stays blank and only a reset would do. It was an option in the DVD playing menus i will try and find what in a bit, otherwise search the PAL PS3 forums thats what i did. Or just to try something else just plug in the composite leads into the PS3 use that and play a DVD it will work.

is your media server setting on or off in the PS3 internet settings. I ask because on my 1st launch PS3 i couldn't play PS2 games unless it was disabled would just give a black screen, was a strange bug as my new PS3 doesn't suffer from that issue what so ever. Could never work out why it was that issue and glad it hasn't happened with this PS3

Phoned up sony again and this time had someone who obviously knew what they were talking about and had a solution - if the person I spoke to last time had known this then it would have saved them the courier costs

I have to disable 1080i and 1080p in the resolutions in order to get the DVDs to play. Its a solution but a crappy one as I shouldnt have to do that, it should do it automatically

Still at least I dont have to get a new one

Yeah lol just checked thats what i had to do, its a problem with the HDMI handshaking on your TV and the PS3, like i said my old TV never had the problem but this one does. It can also be down to a firmware update

Get that problem quite a lot. Some DVDs cant upscale to 1080p. A few occasions ive been able to get it going by pressing triangle on the DVD then selecting Play from Beginning. Or as stated youll just have to turn the upscaler off or select a lower resolution.

Stating the obvious here probably but I assume you're not trying to play "backups"?
My PS3 plays backups just fine.

Strange that you cannot get upscaling to work, I have not had that issue yet.

Try to disable 1080i first (it should be disabled anyway as 720p is better than 1080i) to see if that helps.

If it won't let you play hd options, is your TV HDPC compatible and what connection are you using?
