this maybe a stupid question, but i'm going to ask anyway.

I know Fedora 13 is in alpha stages, however once its Public Release. will my Fedora 12, download 13 Kernel and rebuild itself? or will it require a whole reinstall.

ive never done a number update on Linux

Fedora 13 was released last week

12 won't update to 13 automatically, but you can use preupgrade to do most of the work for you - it's still essentially a re-install though. If you're happy with 12 and there's nothing new in 13 that you want or need like better driver support, new program versions or extra features I'd be inclined to leave it.

I still find the preupgrade quite buggy and it didn't work for me on this occasion. I always prefer to go for a fresh installation.

I did the pre-upgrade from 12 to 13 and it didn't work very well. Spent a day trying to sort out the issues, then did a fresh install from scratch to fedora 13 using dvd media which took me less than two hours to get back to the state my fedora 12 install was in previously.

Morale to the story? I'm just going to do a fresh install from the DVD media from now on.

No fun :) I just spent 4 hours trying to figure out why my "yum upgrade" from F12 to F13 failed, and found that the nvidia drivers in the yum repo are incompatible with the new kernel update. Time to fire off an email to Linus!
