Got an old Dell Pentium III 1GHz, 512MB system that I purchased ages ago to set up as a 24/7 file/print/ftp server. At the time, I downloaded Fedora Core version 4 but still haven't got round to it! :o

Noticed that they are now up to version 5 on Fedora Core and was wondering if I should install that or stick with version 4?

Installed version 4 back then to see what it was like and it worked perfectly fine. All the hardware was detected and functioning fine.

I'm thinking of sticking with version 4 as I'd imagine version 5 might be a little more bloated.

So is it actually running FC4 already? TBH for a server I'd go for CentOS, it's a distro based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux code and is rock-solid. Support/updates are going to be for years rather than months for FC versions :) I'm running CentOS 4.3 on my mail server at home, if you are familiar with setting up a FC box you'll feel right at home

I installed FC 4 on it ages ago just to have a little play with it. Just got a feel of what the OS was like and used some of the applications. Never actually got the server services setup. Stuck it back underneath my bed and I haven't booted it back up since. Got a lot of free time now so I want to restart this little project.

Is CentOS 4.3 pretty much like FC 4 then? I purchased a FC 4 book ages ago that contained excellent guides on setting up the server services. Would this also apply to CentOS 4.3?

Shall I just download the CentOS Server CD or the 4 CD distro?

Bit of a Linux noob me! :p
