Hey guys, I am planning on building the following system, and would like to know if I have made any stupid decisions. The rig is for overlocking and light gaming (source games and MW2), but I plan on upgrading components later as needed for better games (hence the overkill PSU).

XFX 850W Black Edition PSU £130
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD5 mobo £150
Intel Core i5-750 CPU £150
OCZ Intel Extreme 2x2GB £110
Saphire 5670 1GB GDDR5 £ 80

Replace the psu with a ANTEC new truepower 750W, this is cheaper, so will allow a ATI5770 to come on at the same price.

Edit. Even the ANTEC new truepower 650W will power that lot easily, and a second card for future crossfire action. and is one of the best in its price range, recently winning a huge 650w psu round up in custom pc mag/ www.bit-tech.net

Its modular, has long cables and a very good selection of connectors.

The 750w version only improves on this.

To be honest I think the PSU is overkill - unless SLI GTX470s are on the cards, you really don't need 850w.

I'd go for either the Corsair TX650 or TX750. The 650 will be powerful enough for a single GPU setup for a good few years. The 750 will give an extra 100w to play with if you get ambitious.

Use the money you've saved to buy a better graphics card - the extra £50 will make a huge difference to gaming! Grab a 1gb 5770 (assuming the budget won't stretch to a 5830).

Mobo - any reason for going for the P55a-UD5? Don't get me wrong, it's a great mobo, but it's pricey. I know the regular P55 version doesn't have the Lotes socket, but the Foxconn is only an issue if you're going to be pouring crazy voltages through it. (Don't fall for the USB3/SATA3 marketing).

I couldn't see your memory on the site, but the 1280 C7 Ripjaws would be a good choice for the same money:

Have you thought about CPU cooling and storage? If you're recycling your hard drives, you could do worse than stick a 500GB Samsung F3 in there. It's not an SSD, but it's still pretty damn fast!

ok, thanks guys, will check this stuff out

as for the P55A, i couldn't see a big price difference between that and the standard P55, but i guess i was just looking in the wrong place... *facepalm*

as for hdd and cooling, I have a decent cooling setup and a recently bought hitachi 7krpm hdd from my old rig i planned to reuse

however, open to suggestions for a good aftermarket cpu cooler

yup def get the 650w corsair, the tx or modular would be great additions, then use the saved cash on updrading the gfx card to a 5770 vapour-x :)

Yep deffo a 5770 minimum for games. Also, if you're serious about overclocking you'll want to consider an aftermarket cooler. Personally, I like the Corsair H50 water kit, though you can take an i5 to 4GHz with an air cooler - albeit a big, heavy and relatively noisy one.
