Hi guys, not posted in here before as I've only just passed my test ( not bad for a 26 year old!)

Basically I'm after a family sized car but will be travelling 90 miles a day. So something like an older focus, mondeo or the like. Thats the kind of size I'm after.

My main thoughts so far are that although a petrol would be a better drive, a diesel would be more economical. Money is the main issue as I have a grand sat here but thats about it. Obviously insurance is gonna be another issue, so whatever isn't used on the car itself will go on the insurance.

Any help is always appreciated!

You'll be very hard pressed to get a car and insurance for £1k. You'll be most likely paying around £1200 for your first years insurance alone, even at 26.

Car wise, doing 90 miles a day does warrant a diesel, although you're going to be looking at very ropey examples which could possibly throw some big bills at you. At your budget you need to buy on condition rather than mileage/spec. Doing that kind of mileage will also see you going through consumables relatively quickly.

Is there no way you could increase the budget?

Insurance quotes using comparison websites have been around the 700 mark, using examples from auto trader on focus petrol and diesel, but the insurance doesnt have to be part of the grand. The money I have is for the car alone. I know I'm not going to get a fantastic car, but its only gonna be for a few months of the year as I'm a biker by nature, winter isnt fun on 2 wheels.

With a 1k budget and leaning towards a diesel it might be best to hunt around for an older 406 or something with the old school 1.9TD engine.
Maybe an older 1.9TDI VW/Audi/Skoda/etc.

Ibiza would be a daft car to do that many miles in, leon would be fine though.

Could consider the SDI too - I couldn't stick one tbh compared to even a 90bhp tdi but you would really, really have to be going some to break it and they're incredibly cheap as nobody wants them.

The toledo tends to be the best cheap vag diesel as again, nobody likes them - pretty decent car though

I've driven both 2008 TDI Ibiza and Leons, and thought the Ibiza felt marginally more comfortable.

When I was looking at this part of the market, seat toledos seemed to be best for the money. The pdi engines are very reliable.

Seeing as it's only gonna be used for a few months of the year, hence your mileage won't be huge, I'd go with a 2 litre petrol mondeo.

The reason for looking at the diesel options is because of when I do drive its going to be longer more frequent miles. I know its only going to be for a few months, but I still need to pay the fuel bills
