Fellow Whisky Affectionados!

My friends, with the sudden onset of april, i have been faced with this question by my sympathetically aging parents; "What do i want for my Birthday?"

i have come to the conclusion that, as a result of incredible generosity on my parents part in the past (exquisute and elaborate gifts, like my 400D!) that something small would be much better than something extravagant.

to this end, i think that i'd like to recieve a nice Bottle of Single Malt, to commemorate the event of my 18th year of life.

the reason why i have gathered you then, is that as a young and inexperienced Whisky drinker, i'm unsure as to which Whisky to go for, and would like your reccomendations and help in deciding.

note: no crap! JackDaniels and Johnnie Walker Red/Black are out of the question! this Whisky will be drunk Neat or with water. coke will not come within 6 feet of it at all times.

Thanks in advance for all help!

Granted, but in that case does it matter so much what they buy? If you dilute it enough, especially with some frozen tap water, differences will be diminished. No sense in wasting money, unless they want to keep the empty bottle afterwards.

With a full bottle, they could experiment. A measure neat, a measure with a splash of water, a measure with some Perrier or something, a measure diluted 50/50, a measure frozen like an ice lolly if they fancy that idea and can find somewhere cold enough.

i fully intend to experiment with my Whisky. :D

Try getting a few of the sample boxes that have 5-7 little bottles from various places, so you can taste a few to find one you like :)

Or ring up the distillery and say your a buyer for some places and would like a few of the small sample bottles, if your lucky they may send you a proper full size one:p

that might actually work...

Great story, trickyj!

Unlike beer & wine, Whisky neither improves nor deteriorates once it is bottled. The length of time since bottling is thus irrelevant, and only the age in the barrel (the 12 years) matters.

just about, but eventually the alcohol oxidises into alderhydes and the "whisky" becomes very poisionous. this is especially likely to happen if the bottle either uses a cork or has been opened before.

Ah, thanks Bigstan. I look forward to trying a japanese Whisky one day, but they're somewhat over budget. i hear that japanese whisky's more than any others should be diluted with abitta (;)) water?
