Having some new fence panels, bases and posts delivered tomorrow and at some point over the next few weeks I'll have the task of painted the motherhubbards so im on the hunt for some decent paints/stains for them.

Just want something which is going to protect them for a long time. Is the Ronseal stuff any good or should I be looking elsewhere?

Had a quick look at the Osmo stuff online as I have used their Polyx Oils on my kitchen worktop and table etc and it was good stuff. Not sure if their fence and garden stain is up to much though.

I've not got a lot to do, only 4 x 6ft panels.

Anyone any recommendations?

Creosote is the traditional wood preservative and does an excellent job. You can still buy it from certain places.

Look for (more expensive - ~£30 / 5L) SOLVENT based ones with preservative NOT water based ones - which basically just colour the fence brown!

Look at Homebase or B&Q websites,

Before you sink them in, search for postsaver. I won't put a wooden fence post in without it. Read the website it will make complete sense. I swear by them, for the cost of them they will add years to your post. If you don't want to buy them soak the end in a thick bitumen type paint up to and above ground level.

+1 for creosote - I mix mine with 25% old engine oil and it works a treat on my sheds- need to give it a few weeks to dry off though -- We painted fence with green fence paint - wished I had used Creosote on them as well as now got green algae on them.

I had 25ltrs delivered for 45 quid - although most say trade only.

Was looking on there before actually and this one caught my eye as it is oil based and has a shed load of good reviews.

Is that the kind of thing I should be looking for?

I used this stuff on my shed, but it didn't seem to repel water for long. At first the water beads up and skates off the surface, then after a few weeks it starts to soak into the wood again. But maybe the water soaking into the wood doesn't cause it to rot due to the preservative... I'd still prefer it to be permanently water repellent though.

On the plus side it soaks into the wood and really brings out the grain. Looked smart when it was done. After a year the colour had faded quite a bit, but another topup coat revived it back to its original look. Its also very easy to apply with no chance of getting overlaps etc as it just soaks straight in.

I think creosote is probably the best bet on a fence if you can get hold of some. Or a couple of coats of clear (no wax) preservative then something like 5 year ducks back paint, if you want a painted look.

If you have wooden posts, the best way of preserving them is either

Wrap the bottom couple of feet in duck/duct tape, or wrap it with some polythene then tape the top. Then just slope your concrete so no water can sit.

Done this for years and never once had to replace a rotten post.

Just digging up an old thread. My Tiger Shed arrives next week, and prior to that I need to paint some fencing near it. How did you get on with that product?

Also, what do people recommend using on sheds?

I ended up using Johnstones Woodworks Opaque Wood Finish in Jacobean I think it was for the fences. My brother is a decorator and has friends at the local Johnstones centre so picked it up for me at cost!

Excuse the messy garden, just waiting for the artificial turf to be installed, will be getting rid of all the junk and giving it a tidy this weekend!

That looks great. How much paint was used? I'm just about to put the same amount of panels up.

I didn't thin the paint for the first coat both sides and it was only the second coat where I whacked some thinners in to make it go further, plus it goes on much easier and quicker!

You could probably do what I did with just one 5l tin and a 2.5-3l of thinners.

The right of your pic you have some red panels, I have some like that next to the new ones going up.

Do you think you can paint them brown with same stuff? Is it good enough to colour them also?
