Fence panels on a new build

Hey guys,

Are fence panels on a new build garden likely to be treated? I want to paint/treat the fence because I don't like the plain wood look, it looks a bit dull as well as wanting to make sure the wood is looked after.

A few sites mention that if I'd need to apply a clear preserver first before painting it. Yet a couple of people I've spoken too said it will have been treated first so just to go ahead and paint it with some Ronseal or similar

Apologies for the nooby question, I am literally the least competent DIY'er out there :D

Thanks

Are they your fences? Might be worth asking your neighbours before doing it. The paint could seep through gaps and leave them looking horrid the other side.

Thanks thezappa

Oh yeah I'd ask first, I'd ideally want him to do his too or I might offer to do it for him :p

Are they vertical or horizontal?.. Most horizontal laps are rubbish and not even worth preserving.. It'll be balsa before it's even 3 years old..
