I need a fence replacing and so I have had two quotes. To be honest I think they're a bit on the high side, bit equally I have no idea on the going rate in the Midlands.

The job is supply and fit 24 meters or around 11 6ft X 6ft bays. Concrete posts and gravel boards with feather edge panels. Plus two 1.2 X 2 meter feather edge gates. Plus removal and disposal of old fence.

So far I've had a quote of £1850 plus VAT and £1900 including VAT.

If I had time, I'd do it myself. I've priced the materials from a local supplier and it's around £950 delivered including VAT. So the two quotes so far are asking for the best part of a grand for what amounts to a day's work for two guys.

Any advice appreciated.

Going rate in Northamptonshire seems to be £110 - £130 per bay for feather edge panels and concrete posts and gravel boards. Those quotes don't seem miles off to be honest. We paid £1100 for 11 bays of 3 foot panels and that was at a "discounted" rate through a family friend.

Unfortunately these seem about right in my experience, i have both done a lot fencing myself, and had a lot done.

As you've found, its well worth tackling jobs like this yourself if you can possibly find the time.

Might be a bit far for them as they're Birmingham based but I had fencing from https://www.sheldonfencing.uk/

I had a very reasonable quote off them a few years ago for 11 bays around £1000 fitted but ended up going the DIY route

Had 11 bays of 4 foot feather edge and concrete posts/gravel board and postcrete for about £400 in the end

ive literally just said goodbye to a fencing guy whilst he goes off to quote.

25m of fencing including 15m 12inch concrete gravel boards and the rest 6inch concrete gravel boards. Will reuse current posts.

Im in Surrey and i fully expect it to come in 3k or so.

terrifying really.

Sounds about right.

We've just had 8m of hit and miss installed for 700 quid. Took two of them one day.

I've got 40 metres to do with some trees, bushes and brambles currently pushing it further inward, several people have looked and measured for quotes with not one replying :(

Ya talking at least £100 a bay plus the two gates must cost decent money. Add in disposal of the old panels and any extra labour.. Not really that shocking.(although yes its easy to do yourself). Also did you price the postcrete / cement?

We charge about £120 to £150 a bay depending on if there are trees or other obstacles.

6' x 5' Fetheredge panel costs £40
12" concrete gravel board £14to £15
8' concrete post £15
Post mix, if you are accurate with the holes , lets say 1 bag per hole at £5 or if a larger hole £10 per hole.
So thats £80 (£85) cost per bay, + labour and removal and disposal of old panels/posts (which is not cheap ((£100+))
So thats about £90-£95 cost per bay

Most pre-made fetheredge gate are only 900mm wide so if you need to get a 1200mm gate made up we pay £80 each

OP would need to have the skill to do the job right. keep it nice and straight with even steps if the ground is uneven.
A 8' concete post must weigh about 50kg each so he would need help.
12" gravel board is not much lighter.
Then to dig 12 holes each about 22 inches deep. (8' posts are actually 94")
Fit framing for the gates and hang them etc...

The quote is within range of what we would charge

Had my new fence finished today. 14 bays (2 half size) and I paid just over £1800 all in including removal of all trees and bushes that were along the rear of the garden. Local gardener/landscaper who has done smaller fencing jobs for people I know.

Was here 2 days including 1 with a friend/helper so 3 days of labour.

More than happy at the price as materials alone when I priced it was around £1k so £800 for labour and disposal for the work is fine. It’s perfectly straight and I didn’t have to lift a finger other than make some coffee.

I do fencing and I charge around £110-120 a section. But it depends if I have to get rid of the old post and what the access to the area is like. I charge more on new builds too. The ground is usually rubble so it more work making the holes.

Spoke to my neighbour about this last night and he said it’s about right, depending on the work required to remove the old fence and how much it costs to get rid of the stuff he may charge more as that can be a PITA.

seems at the low end given the material costs and labor.

given you have 2 similar quotes is a good indication that is the going rate

Yes I did, even the the hinges and locks for the gates.

Looks like I'm doing it myself or I'm paying £1000 for labour and disposal.

Thanks for all the replies.

Honestly mate I would pay it, my neighbour is a fencer and he’s done all ours with me assisting him, I wouldn’t want to be trying to do it myself especially without the expertise of him, don’t underestimate how hard work the digging old posts out and sorting the straight lines and level tops out is, if it’s not right it’ll look a right pigs ear

Going to bite the bullet and pay the professionals.
Best idea I think, I don’t know your finances but to me I would see it as a grand well spent, the fence will look bang on, it’ll get done a lot quicker and also save me breaking my sack (I’m an IT nerd so manual labour is not my forte).

Also the cost of disposal for the old fence could be a couple of hundred as you may not have the contacts to get rid on the cheap so have to pay someone top dollar

Hello mate,

Are you still doing fencing? If so, can you give me your details. I am in Bedfordshire also. Thanks
