Ferrari's Luca Di Montezemolo is to step down as chairman of the Formula 1 team.
His departure follows a poor season on the track and disagreements with Sergio Marchionne, chief executive officer of parent company Fiat.
"This is the end of an era after almost 23 marvellous and unforgettable years," said Di Montezemolo, 67. "It has been a great privilege."
Marchionne will replace Di Montezemolo, who leaves the role on 13 October.

Guess it's not the biggest surprise ever.

Well to be fair it's hardly his sole responsibility the ferrari is a barge. The designers and researchers all need a kick up the backside too.

He's the top man the buck stops with him as in all organisations. It's his job to get the right people in place or make sure others are bringing in the right people. The car is garbage and I can't see that changing for the next year either.

His time was up.

I never understood the Ferrari F1 team structure. What was his role compared to Marco Mattiacci? Why on earth do they need someone like him going round basically doing a Bernie?

Business vs Team Management. Its why Mercedes have a number of 'heads'. Someone who is great at leading a technical team won't always be a good business head to steer an organisation, and vice versa.

Luca was President of Ferrari, the whole company whereas Mattiacci is in charge solely of the sporting division of Ferrari.

Absolutely

I read somewhere Marchionne will be out of a job soon anyways as they are floating FIAT on the stock market or something, so he has created a job for himself.. Clever guy

I'd be shocked if that was the case. FCA is the brainchild of Marchionne, he's steered FIAT up to this point following the acquisition of Chrysler. It'd be a huge surprise if the board decided to boot him following the float.

Bye bye Luca

Chow, arivi derchi or something.

If McLaren can't developed a decent motor, I don't see much hope for team donkey.

Hopefully they will get fed up and pull out of F1.

Chow, arivi derchi or something.

Really? Couldn't be bothered to look up the spelling? :p

For future reference - 'ciao' and 'arrivederci' would have been a lot closer to the mark. And thus ends our Basics Of The Italian Language™ lesson for today, children.

As for the rest of your flamebait post - I do hope you catch dysentery some time soon.

:D

Much like Scottish independence, while I do think Ferrari leaving F1 would be bad for all involved, I'd love to see it happen just to watch how they (Ferrari) cope on their own.

Sergio wants to take the company 'mainstream' whereas LDM wanted to retain an aura of exclusivity.

There's also the thought that Emilio Botin, head of Santander and big Alonso/F1 fan died suddenly recently. His Daughter has been named as his successor and apparently isn't an F1 fan and sees the multi-millions paid to Alonso and Ferrari as unnecessary. Things will certainly be changing in Modena in the next few months.

Can't say I'm sorry to see him go from the F1 team but I do wonder how the changes to Fiat/Ferrari will impact on the F1 team.
