Started work on the 300zx today, having never done any real mechanics before some would say i'm insane starting on a car like this, but what the hell, its not too bad.
Progress made today..

(lower covers and radiator removed)

Upon removing the lower cover I discovered where the PAS fluid is leaking from, and boy is it bad, pretty much soaked the cover through with oil and covered everything down there :/

Lost my 1/4" ratchet and the 1/2" 10mm wont fit on the bolts in the fan, so thats where I had to call it a day, next stop Halfords.

currently, restore it. Currently it likes leaking oil, from one of the rocker covers, the rear main seal, and the PAS system dumps quicker than I can refill it. So strip down the engine to bare heads, replace the rocker cover gaskets, remove the failure-prone intake manifold watercooling, timing belt swap along with new tensioner, water pump, ancilliary belts, replace knackered a/c compressor, fix the PAS leak, once all that stuff is apart i'll clean it all up. After that, headlights out for a thorough clean of the internals (dirty lenses are the main reason why the lights are so poor), fit an autobox fluid cooler, then strip and rebuild the brake calipers and put fresh fluid in.

Nothing particularly exciting, but everything should be working well for a good amount of time after its done, upgrades will come when more money comes :p

Next student loan time then? ;)

Thats what mines used for! :D

nah the loan pays my rent, there would be some annoyed people if i spent it on brembo brakes, koyo radiators and tein suspension :D

Ah, I guess this is the world-famous Japanese build quality I keep reading about......

i really fancy one of these, but im unsure about rwd. love em though

What about it? Just Do some time on a skid pan with a rwd car. Be sensible in the wet and i don't see why it would be that bad. Also you can go on one of those car control courses.

well the other day I got kinda stuck, one of the bolts on the top water hose was very stubborn, in fact this allen key came ot its demise trying to undo it.

Clearly this wasn't going to work, so today I aquired the appropriate hex sockets and got that badboy out without drama.

Todays progress...

Allen keys are awful, I gave up with them years ago after trying hex head sockets for the first time :)

Thought i'd post a bit of an update on this seeing as its coming back together a bit now.

Changed the timing belt last week, pretty straight forward job.

New water pump should be here wednesday, as should my new external ATF cooler. Going to pick up a stat from nissan tomorrow. So all being well it should be fired up on wednesday.
Its been ages now, so quite excited by the prospect of starting her up again :)

and heres a pic to keep up the theme

Sure, don't expect anything great though, the back boxes are fubar. Next on the list is decats and straight pipe single exit system.
