Skip further down if you just want to read the questions and skip the long post :o :D

I have no problem building/repairing/upgrading custom pc's, learned to myself a few years ago. Anyway someone has asked me to upgrade a Dell Dimension E520 for them, the original spec is:

305w PSU
Intel Celeron D 347
512MB DDR2 533Mhz Value Memory
150GB Sata Hard Drive
Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE
Microsoft Windows Vista Home 32bit

Pants PC I know, it will struggle to do even the basic of tasks. They want it upgrading to be able to play some games at a decent level and also watch movies, convert / burn audio etc. My advice would be to sell it and put the cash towards a new custom build (Socket 775 builds are cheap these days with a P35 chipset) as there is so only so much that can be done to upgrading something like this (motherboard limitations, psu etc) - but they want me to do what I can with this.

------------------------------------

I need some tips advice on a few things before upgrading, as its a Dell PC the layout inside is somewhat different to what I am used to. Here is a pic found from google images (looks the same)

1) Going to be replacing the rubbish Celeron with a Quad (Q6600), Ive only had a quick glance of the inside but there seems to be some large black plastic thing covering the processor. My guess is that it is some kind of shroud covering the heatsink or something to help the airflow. I cant find any documentation on it for removal etc, never seen one like it. Fairly positive it will be no big deal getting off and back on, but getting some tips and advice first might help in the long run if any of you have worked with something similar.

2) I have removed the 512MB DDR2 533Mhz Value Memory and replaced it with some spare 2x1GB DDR2 667Mhz Kingston Memory I had lying around (will put in a 2x2GB DDR2 800Mhz soon).

Normally if inserting two Memory modules I put them into DIMM1 and DIMM3 for Dual Channel. But the Dell manual says to put pairs into DIMM1 and DIMM2. What would you do, I still think slot 1 and 3 would be better - BIOS says it is running Interleaved which must be dual channel, if I put it in 1 and 2 its only single channel, so obviously slightly slower.

---------------------------

After upgrades the spec will be something like:

305w PSU (crap I know but I read something about Dell use special PSU's or some crap)
Intel Q6600
2x2GB DDR2 800Mhz
650GB Sata Hard Drive (done)
Wireless Card (done)
Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE (to replaced with something later on)
Microsoft Windows 7 Home 64bit

Sorry for boring you with long post, someone might enjoy passing the time by reading it :p

Looks like a good plan, the RAM upgrade was a necessity and the Q6600 will be a big jump in performance and there seems to be a fair few people running this upgrade (eg here). Just make sure you update the BIOS to the most recent version and you should be fine. As for the shroud around the cooler- the service manual tells you to remove that. As for the CPU install, I would recommend using some TIM remover to clear out the old TIM/thermal paste and some good new TIM (like MX4).

As for the graphics card, I think the PSU is going to be the biggest issue. However, looking at the pictures it seems to be a relatively small length ATX design PSU - so replacing it should be pretty easy. Something like a XFX Core 450 or the Antec Truepower New 550W. Personally I would go with the Antec since it is a fantastic price right now, excellent quality unit, has modular cables and will be great to carry over to a new PC when this upgraded finally needs replacing.

As for a graphics card, I would go with this GTX 460 1GB or this HD 6850.

Another thing which will make a relatively old system feel much faster is the addition of an SSD as a boot drive (and also to put the main applications on). Something like this OCZ Vertex 2 50GB or a Crucial M4 64GB would be excellent.

some good points cheers, already did the bios last time I had the PC its now running at latest 2.40.

I would personally change motherboard and PSU but they dont want to shell that much out, especially if you throw in a SSD, so Im stuck with some of the basic stuff.

A low powered graphics card maybe like a 5770 or something might be an idea. I had another thread with some reccomendations somewhere for that. It wont be for ultra gaming, maybe high/very high settings depending on game.

I have some isoproply alcohol and mx-2 thermal paste so thats not a problem, just wondered what to do with the shroud thing.

Looking at the pictures, that dell seems to use a non-standard motherboard form-factor - so a motherboard replacement isn't really a possibility in that case.

As for a graphics card - pretty much any card that can perform relatively well in modern game will not run off that 305W PSU. Hence, I would change the PSU if you want to do a graphics card upgrade. The Corsair CX430W would be an even cheaper option than the XFX 450W and will happily run a GTX 460 or HD 6770 (this one is a nice card - basically the same as the 5770, but a bit cheaper at the moment).

As for going for a lower-powered card than the 6770 - there really isn't much value to be gained below this point. The cost savings are small and the performance decreases are large.

Another good option would be to go for an OEM GTX 460 768MB card - this only has one year warranty but is about the same price as the 6770 on OCUK and a good deal more powerful.

agreed the PSU definitely needs changing, I will put that point across especially if its powering a new 500GB hard drive, Q6600 and more ram etc. Adding a new graphics card would be pushing the rubbish dell psu to its max!

Got most the upgrade done, big difference :D

The shroud thing just flipped back after I loosened the screws (had to remove the gfx card and sound card to get in properly).

just need a fairly decent graphics card in there, definitely needed upgrading :D
