OK then, down to business.
1. My parents mobo just went pop, just trying to figure out if it was s478 or 775. Its an off the shelf machine with P4 3.4 Ghz bought in 2003. AFAIK the 3.4 was near the top end of 478 but was still acceptable. Can the socket type be decided without getting them to look inside (they are in Southampton and I'm in Bristol!)?
2. I'm thinking of upgrading my system to a core 2 duo based spec, and might be able to flog my current kit to them. My current spec is an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe, with a 3.0Ghz P4 Northwood s478, gig of mixed unbranded memory and an AGP 6800GT. Three questions, if I bought the Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo coupled with a Core 2 Duo, would I be able to temporarily use my current DDR1 RAM? Also, since I don't as yet have a PCI-E graphics card, is there any way of using the system without immediately buying a card? I don't think there is, as there is no onboard video, but I just thought I would check.
One further question- would the system listed above be compatible with Vista when it finally surfaces? Is it simply a DX9 card that is needed?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Simon
