Hey, been messing around with my lights again today:)

Not 100% happy, will need to give it a go when its not as windy as i was nearly losing my softbox and umbrella! Also, more ambient light in the shot would help a bit, more like MrSix's work, but I do like this style a bit....really just need to find a way of getting rid of the catchlights

This is nearly the set up for the front on shot, I moved the flash that is above the car there to side on pointing onto the bonnet a bit, and tweaked the position of the 2 diffused lights

There is a Metz CT45-CL1 in the softbox, a Hanimex PZ4200 cheapo metz copy flash in the umbrella and a 430ex naked.

Yeah, 2 and 3 really work for me as well. 1 had potential, but as you say you need to get rid of those catchlights on the side. Really clever positioning of the lights is going to be key here. Id love to see a similar lighting setup in an industrial setting though. Find your self an abandoned factory or multi story carpark. Good work :)

Yup. You've done well with 2 and 3. I'm not so keen on 1 as apart from the catches on the side, the lighting is just generally more harsh (on the bumper etc).

Hi there,

I think that 2 and 3 are great, I could see the second one appearing in a brochure or on an advert or something. (although I can see a tripod leg in it and now that I've noticed it, it just wont go away :() Otherwise great though!

very nice, as above 2 and 3 are great.
Can i ask what you triggering the flashes with?

Nice images, No.3 for me. (not really into cars!)

Not sure if I am right, but won't a Polariser filter on the flash and lens help with the reflection?

i'll back away very slowly if I am on the wrong tack!! :p

flashes are triggering with Cactus wireless transmitters, which I bought from our very own MrSix when he upgraded to Pocket Wizards.

For those saying you wish you had a set up like this, it's very inexpensive!

The flash that is firing into the umbrella i got 2nd hand from ebay for £4 including postage, and it's perfect for the job! The wireless flash slaves (5 recievers, 1 transmitter) were £45 inc postage 2nd hand, so theoretically you could have the flashes and all the wireless gubbins for £57 with 2 spare recievers! Then just need to add the diffusion:

The brolly was £11 and the softbox £27, but that was helped by staff discount.....would've been £25 for the brolly and £55 for the softbox retail.

I just used the tripods i had lying around to hold them all, any cheapo one will do (I get the feeling that a Canon 430ex sitting on top of a £450 Carbon Fibre Gitzo with a £140 uniloc ball head is a bit overkill :p)

Cheers for the comments guys :) Messiah Khan , that's my exact plan next time :) will be cleaning my car up and finding a decent industrial estate to play with.

Hmmm, wonder if you can mix wireless transmitters and Nikons CLS.
Use CLS to trigger the SB600 and wireless to fire A.N.Other flash?
Probably not, so would have to trigger other flashes from a strobe trigger.
Nice setup and cheaply done. Off camera flash is some thing i want to get into and Nikons CLS does this well(but can get expensive)

Why not just not use the CLS stuff? Put it into manual mode and fire that with a similar slave to what im using?

are you using wireless to all the flashes or just firing one flash wireless and the rest off the strobe from the wireless flash?

I like No.2 and could you pop round and clean my car when you have a spare minute.

the car was brand new that day :p no cleaning done yet.
