The mrs and I are expecting our first baby in January. Wary of the fact we're not going to have a lot of money, I'm also aware that my current set-up is getting a little ropey for computers games etc, and I can't have that :D

Current
C2D E8400 o/c to 3.7Ghz
Biostar Tpower i45 motherboard
4GB Corsair TwinXXMS2 memory
GTX 260 896MB
OCZ Vertex 2 60GB SSD drive

It's also pretty end of the line as it's last generations parts. I gave myself a budget of just £200 as it's simply the limit of what I could afford. Having done a wee bit of research I've bought the following.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz
Asus M4A88T-M Motherboard
8GB Corsair Vengeance Blue memory

Adding this stuff to the rest of my existing hardware. Obviously the CPU will be undergoing a bit of an overclock. I'm gutted as I have a Corsair H50 water cooler but I've lost the box it came in, along with the AM3 parts :( Means I've had to go with air cooling for now.

Any thoughts/opinions welcome? Also curious what kind of speed advantage I can expect. I saw a few comparisons between the E8400 and X4 955 which seemed to suggest I could get as much as a 50% increase?!

give corsair a message, you should be able to get a replacement AM3 bracket from them pretty cheap.

the processor and motherboard look mighty familiar :)

Funny you should mention that, I messaged them earlier to get a quote for a new bracket. I did find they sell it on their site for $9.99, postage is $45 though. So seriously hoping they email me back with better news!

I should have an H50 arriving this week, and hopefully I'll still have the AMD brackets. I won't need them so message me later this week and hopefully I'll be able to help you out

Just noticed messages are disabled on the forum. Do you have an email address?

Thanks Surveyor for the tip!

No negative comments on my choice of parts so I'm going to assume I've done a good job for a change :D

If you could increase your budget a tad you could get an i5.

However just a quick look and i came up with this.

i3 seems to be better for gaming.
