few PS3 buying questions

If anyone is serious about wanting to play PS2 games then just do yourselves a big favour and buy a PSTwo for what 80 quid?

The only PS3's to have near perfect emulation were the original US 20/60 models because they had all the hardware onboard to get the job done properly, even the EU 60 model which people swear by were in part software emulated and the US 80 model is set to be the same (ie. cheaper but very limited BC-wise).

If you visit here you can see how buggy the BC on EU 60/US 80 models is compared to the original (no corner cutting) models, it may well improve with future software updates but like with Xbox 360 I doubt BC is on top of the "to do" list; and there are still probably 50% of games untested and likely not working or buggy.

As for the lack of card readers buy a cheap USB hub and the job's a good 'un.

ive always wondered why sony droped the b/c as supposidly it only costs them about a $1 per machine. But then i remembered the new ps2 thats coming out which would explain something i guess

More than $1 I'm sure. Still, 5,000,000 units made all with a further $1 loss is $5m, plus whatever they were losing anyway.

Nope. One of it's mistakes, however with Home we are getting trophies as such which you can show off. At least that's how I understand it.

Eh?

It's not really a mistake though is it? It's not really needed...

Not having a controller for example would be a mistake...:p

I think it's one of the reasons that the 360 is ahead of the PS3 though... it makes people want to play the 360 and buy more games :)

Actually, Achievements are a massive selling point. Many games have been sold thanks to that little addition. Believe me, Sony would have sold more games when there was 'nothing' on the PS3.
It's a business mistake in the terms that it was free to implement and would have reaped financial reward over the lifespan of the PS3.

There was news before pertaining a link between achievements and the selling of games and that they had a positive effect on games sold.

I agree that it is a selling point and have myself bought cheap games with the intent of just getting the GP but i don't feel it is integral or a mistake by sony by not employing it into their console, yes i did kind of miss it at first but it kinda saves me money in the long run! :p I play games for what they are now and not just for GP. Like Uncharted, i didnt miss Achievements in that whatsoever because it was a fun and thrilling "movie" ;) :p

Hopefully they will have this "Medal" scheme in Home. Looking forward to it!

Just came across a good comparison table for all the different versions:

Software emulation is not that good really so to be honest you are better with a separate PS2 and a 40GB if BC is "important" to you, since US consoles will not play PS2 PAL games.
