Few questions about servers..

When i build my new pc in november im going to have my current pc spare and i was thinking about turning it into a server. Its got a 3200+, 1gb ram , 6800GT etc. I could always upgrade a few bits i need to but on the whole i dont think it would cost to much as i have case, powersupply, hhd, mobo, dvd etc already there.

These questions are based on the fact i have a limited knowledge on both networking and servers:

1) What sort of internet demand would it take to run a CSS server for say... 16 people lag free?

2) In November i will have 2 desktop pc's and 2 laptops. Considering i have no networking knowledge or server knowledge. How would i go about turning one of the desktops into a server and then running internet and file sharing off from it?

Also would the internet speed take a big hit doing so?

3) could i streme digital tv through it to the other pcs?

Thanks.

I dont know anything about CSS but ive hosted SoF2 server before and it needed the whole 256KBIT up just for 6 players and even then it lagged sometimes so I'd say you would need 768KBIT upstream at least just to host it with lag or 1MBIT up to host it properly..I dont know if you can get more than 512KBIT upstream from an ISP in the UK but I havent looked into it.

You want to run the Internet from one of the PC's - surely a router would do the job better - Ive ran a PC hosting an ADSL Connection before and it was never as good as as decent router. If you're upstream is pretty much maxed out from the game server the downstream will also take a hit but it would still work, just worse at initically loading the pages due to the higher ping it would have.

1) more than any home connection is gonna give you im afraid. Probably want as a bare minimum a 2mb SDSL (even then im not sure it'll be enough)

2) internet sharing: no no, routers all the way. File sharing yes yes, nice and easy just install sever 2k3. make sure every pc is on the same workgroup. then just go right click > share on the folder you want to share :) nice n easy

3) dont know about that personally but assuming you've got the TV card needed then i imagine its possible. But only to other PC's in the house... on your LAN (local area network, ie the computers connected via router/hubs etc. eg 100mbit network connection).

good luck

Since Virgin uped me to the 20Meg pipe I've tested the up-pipe and gotten reports that indicate it's possibly 1mbit now.. might just have been an overly keen 768 I suppose.

Thanks for fast replys. Shame abou the css but i gues it was expected really.

Its just having this spare pc i want to do something with it.

Any of you got any ideas for a use for it? It has to be kept so that if my new one dies for any reason i have a back up. But i could still use it as a server pc or anything like that.

May set it up for file shareing when i get the network going also if there is no other fun things to do with it :P

We do have a hell load of family photos which could probly fill about 160 gb hard drive. Not sure what else i can do with it. The tv streming could be good as then i could have tv anywhere in the house if the network is fast enough.

Well currently my internet is on Aol and as you probly all know it makes me wana jump out of my window.

But by november it should be upgraded to at least 8mb and maybe more. Though i have old phone lones so i dont know how that will affect the speed of it.

Either way. I doubt ill have sufficient upload speed to host css lag free.

:EDIT:

I was looking at getting BE who do 1.3meg upload and 24meg download.

Anyone know what BE is like?

dont forget you get traffic shaped at 128k/192k/256k upload speeds depending on what package you're on..

in reply to the above post, i've just joined BE, bear in mind you're not guaranteed 24mb down, depends on your line quality/distance from exchange. i get 12mb down, 1.3mb up and i'm about 1.2km from my local exchange.

thats only if you go over the limits at peak hours (4pm-12pm)

also i couldnt comment on BE. but in theory you, even if you dont get the full down you should still get a fair amount, if not all of the upstream.

Would you say they throttle your speeds?

I dont know how far i am away from my exchange. Id hope to get 18mb+

What is 1.3mb upload speed in Kb ?

I just finnished reading that long post of yours in the other topic. Some good info in it.

:EDIT:

Also alllec, when you have peak usage limits and download limits (not sure if that includes upload). Does this affect playing games online because thats technicaly sending information back and forth between players. If so does this mean that for a guy like me that plays online a lot its a bad idea to have peak limits and download/upload limits.

As ADSL24 have higher upload limits:

1300kb :O so i should be able to run at least 12 man server off that surely on css? if you need 256kb for a laggy 8 (which i asked a friend and his uncle had a server which we played on and it was 256kb and lagged over around 7)

If you do go over the limits yes you will get throttled. But this will not affect gaming performance. UNLESS you are running the server then yes it will have an effect :)

So if i get this Be with the 1.3meg upload.

You recon i can do my own Css server with 12 or so players? maybe more? And be able to play it my self as well.

This is also on their wireless router they give. I dont know how good that is.

I have blocked / deleted everyone on my msn buddy. ill re-add you now.
