Hello,

My grandad is looking at getting Sky TV for the first time.

At the moment he only has channels 1 to 5 via Analogue areial.

He loves films and is wanting Sky for all the movie channels.

Questions,

1)Will he need a new arial ?

2)Will he need to have a satilite dish on the side of his house ?

3)Can he record from Sky channels (movie channels etc)

4)If you can record from Sky channels, can you record one channel and watch another ? (eg, record Sky Moives 1 and watch BBC 1 ? )

5)Would you say Sky is easy to operate ? my grandads gonna be use it ! is everything straight forward enough and easy to understand ?

6)Is there anyway to trail Sky for free ?

Thanks Ben

No

Yes

Yes with either SKY+ or to an external recorder via SCART ( Some PPV content has Macromedia but this can be bypassed).

4)If you can record from Sky channels, can you record one channel and watch another ? (eg, record Sky Moives 1 and watch BBC 1 ? )

Yes, but only with SKY+

5)Would you say Sky is easy to operate ? my grandads gonna be use it ! is everything straight forward enough and easy to understand ?

Easy as falling off a log. All driven by the Electonic Program Guide (EPG).

6)Is there anyway to trail Sky for free ?

You can order and have it fitted, then if you cancel within 30 days SKY will de-install and refund.

Thanks Ben

As above. Really would recommend Sky+ over an external recording solution - not only does it let you record one thing while watching another (or record 2 things at once), it would be a heck of a lot easier to use!

Don't do it, the movies are old and mostly crap. A freeview pvr would probably be better, you still get film4.

lol, film four is dire, very little content, unlikely to be updated as closed down film division, and repeat films that often it is like groundhog day

They're not that old. This month they're showing (amongst a lot of others obviously) Sahara, The Ring Two, Wedding Crashers, and Coach Carter (it's a slow month tbh, but that's not really their fault).

I can't remember when they last showed a good film on sky. The whole idea of watching sky movies is to watch films at home so you don't have to go to the cinema, but by the time films appear on sky they are old as far as I'm concerned and I would rather have gone to see the film if it was a good one. Maybe they ought to do some research into what is a good movie by viewing the imdb top 1000.

What a load of garbage.

Yes, they repeat movies a lot. However if you can't find something to watch, you clearly don't like films that much. Add to the fact that with Sky Cinema 1 + 2 you can watch some classic films also, there is more choice than you can throw a stick at.

I believe there are at least 2 premiers a week. Recently, I can recall enjoying Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Flight Of The Phoenix and Robots.

Film4 is crap. Adverts in the films. Repeats of really old movies (I mean, tonight, the highlight is The Godfather Part III), and they certainly won't have movies before Sky.

EDIT - Hahahaha, movies are old to you because they were in the cinema first? Have you any idea how movie releases work? If you don't like Sky, no one is forcing you to pay for it.

They are old because almost every film has been avalible on dvd for ages before sky show it, I mean sometimes they've shown films from the 80's. I don't want to watch films I've seen months ago, for the same price you could rent a few good dvds a month.

Sky gets slated a lot and I do think it's about £10 a month overpriced.

However, the service the provide is fantastic and there is loads of content.

Lots of people say then can never find anything to watch, they usually limit themselves to 10-15channels. There are loads of junk channels but also some real crackers!

The selection of movies is fantastic.

people moan about repeats

but where else can you watch all of the top gears ?

granted you come across ones you've already seen, but when you come across one you missed. its great

same goes with the old stuff on UKTV gold like porridge, open all hours, only fools and horses etc.

plus anything that goes on normal TV, usually comes on UKTV later. Missed the last series of Murphy's Law ? no problem just wait for it come round again on sky.

People moan about "repeats" but i defy anybody to have watched every single ephisode of every single series they like without A) only like maybe 1 or 2 series or B) having the full collection on DVD.

Band of brothers was shown back to back on Sky after it came on TV, and about the same time as it came out on DVD. At the time the box set was like £80 and i recorded the whole lot onto VHS for free !!

sky does have it uses, but just dont expect all 300 channels to have on something you want to watch all the time.

Sky is also great for niche tv programs- stuff such as wheeler dealers on discovery real time, mythbusters on discovery etc. Plus then football and movies, chuck sky+ into the equation too and I'd say the £43.50/month we pay here is well worth while.

mythbusters on discovery
Mythbusters on discovery is soooo much better than mythbusters on BBC - every single one of the BBC's changes are for the worse.

The only thing that Sky could do with is a service like Telewest's teleport service - where you can choose most things that have been on in the last week and watch them - and watch lots of other things that haven't been shown for ages.
