Just got my new build system up and running, and hope maybe somebody can give me a few pointers before I start overclocking, my setup is as follows:
Core 2 Duo E4300
2gb Crucial Ballistix PC64000
Gigabyte 965p DS3 Rev. 1 with F7 bios
Coolermaster Hyper TX Heatsink and fan

Running a few tests and would like a few questions answered before I get started:
firstly how to I manually set the RAM Timings because at the moment it is running 5 5 5 16, it should be 4 4 4 12 I believe. (I have already upped the volts to 2.2 (+0.4)
In CPU-z (version 1.40) the "Core Speed" is showing as 1206 mhz is this some sort of bug that it is not showing up at the right speed or something fishy??
thanks in advance.

about the CPU you need to check the settings in BIOS, make sure it is running as it suppose to be, not sure what E4300 is but my E6300 is 266 FSB and 7 multiplier which is 1862Mhz on stock.

Ok thanks, manged to get the memory timings correctly set and put a small overclock on the board, problem seems to be when I view the CPU Mhz in CPU-z the multiplier is moving between x6 and x9, what have I forgot to set in the bios to lock the multiplier to x9??
tia.

Yes I have done all that mate, just wondering why the multiplier is shifting between x6 and x9 in CPU-z when not under load is this normal, when under load the multiplier stays at x9.
I am running Vista Ultimate Edition btw, anybody any thoughs.

So far I have overclocked to 2.8ghz and run Orthos for 6 hours and have now put the overclock up to 3ghz, temps are:
(tat) 60 under full load 45 idle.
(coretemp) 48 under full load 36 idle.

do these seem reasonable considering the current hot spell or too high??

Vcore is 1.4 in bios btw.

ps screenies once I get my new rig online.

Sounds like one something to do with speed throttling enabled In the Advanced Bios Features Menu.

Disable all of the following:

CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E)
CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2)
CPU EIST Function

Double check these in the bios. Make sure all are disabled.

ha i know what your problem is.

i use windows vista business edition and what ive found is that when CPU is not overclocked (1.8Ghz) if no load on it goes down to 1.6Ghz and as soon as i run something it goes back to 1.8  its something to do with vista's power management.

go to control panel --> power management (i think) and change it to performance power settings see what happens. not at home atm so i cant check.

i dont know if you noticed but vista turns off your components (HDD for example) after like 20 min of no use to save power.

Thanks have disabled all those and CPU-z is reading the multiplier as x9 as oppose to fluctuating between the two when the CPU was not on full load.
cheers

thanks for that - haven't had time to look into the power management of vista, didn't even know it existed ... lol.
XysteR seems to have solved my problem with his suggestion but will have a look at what you suggest once I get a moment :D
