Hi,

A while back I bought a 5870 but RMA'd because of my second monitor flashed when overdrive was enabled, together with some crappy FPS on NFS-Shift + a couple others.

I've been waiting for Fermi to come out but from what I have read it seems it may not be a clever move due to heat/performance vs price.

I've got around £400 saved up so I'm gunna buy something and If I dont go with Fermi I'd like some advice on what else would suit.

The limiting factor is 1) I have a P35 chipset with PCI-E 16x v1.1 not v2.0 and 2) My PCI-E Slots that support Crossfire are only 16x & 4x

I am thinking something like dual 5770's or 5850's or I might push the envelope and grab a 5970.

My questions are;

1) Will my P35 board starve the 5970 in a PCI-E 16x v1.1 slot?
2) Will the second PCI-E 4x slot starve the second GPU if I go crossfire?
3) If I go down the ATi route, are the drivers more mature and have they fixed the second monitor flashing issue?

Thanks Guys, Much Apprecaited :)

Well the crappy (as you put it) FPS in need for speed shift wasn’t the cards fault. It was the designers /coders of the game getting optimisation for ATI cards a little wrong. Patch 1.2 or something (latest patch downloadable from EA) fixed this, I had the same issue…

Getting around 25fps no matter what I changed, patched the game, 1920 x 1080 with 4 x AA sees the game on a 5870 running averages 60fps with v sync enabled…

As for the bus, well I think that will be fine, it’ll just down speed to match the bus speed.

To be honest, I think most will say just get a 5850, seems to be the one most recommend as the best card for the best money.

As for the dual screen flicker issues... Yeah I too get this, and I'm very annoyed about it... Seems to be no fix, or upping the PCI mhz in the Bios has been known to fix some issues. Didn’t work for me.
