Hey Overclockers,

I'm currently looking to upgrade a few things on my rig and would like to your input. Here is my current rig:

1. Processor - Intel Sandybridge i5-2500K Unlocked Core i5 Quad-Core Processor (3.30GHz, 6MB Cache, Socket 1155)

2.Motherboard - AsRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 Motherboard, Socket 1155, PCI-Express 3.0, DDR3, USB 3.0, HDMI, 7.1 HD Audio, ASRock Instant Boot

3.Memory (RAM) - Corsair CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9B 16GB (4x4GB) 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 Vengeance Blu Memory Four Module Kit

4.Hard drive(s) - Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic
- Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 ATA Device (931 GB)

5.Graphics card(s) - Asus Radeon R9 290 "Voltage Unlocked" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

6.Power supply (PSU) - Seasonic G series 750w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply

7.Case - BitFenix Ghost Silent Tower Case - Black

8. Cooling - Corsair Hydro H110 280mm High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

I'm going to drop in a new processor:

1 x Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £275.99

And also adding a new GPU to XFire with my current R9 290:

1 x Asus Radeon R9 290 DirectCU II OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £239.99

Just wondering will I run into any problems doing this? Will the 2 GPU's XFire together ok?

Cheers guys!

You'll be fine. But, you will need a new mobo, Z97.

Cheaper option would be a secondhand, 2600k, 2700k or a 3770k.

Yeah I'm aware my mobo is quite dated. But I would be ok to make these upgrades and update the mobo at a later date won't I?

No you cant run the i7 4790K on 6x 7x series chipset. It can only work on 8x 9x chipset, and best on Z87, Z97 chipset.

I would agree with Idleman, get yourself an older yet still excellent 2600k, 2700k or 3770k. They are very nearly as fast as the Haswell 4790k and the Sandy Bridge one's can be overclocked to heaven and beyond!

They go for around £110 if I recall correctly, cheap and cheerful upgrade.
Your motherboard will be fine for Xfire anyhow, so you are sorted there.

Ok guys I have decided to change a few things, I am going to add the:

Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle

Also another to Crossfire with my other R9 290:

My question is while I encounter any problems doing this with my current PSU?

P.S sorry about the links I'm currently on the works computer.

Thanks in advance.
