Hi Guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my built by HP special to something abit faster.

At the moment I have the following:

HP motherboard with a E8400
8GB DDR3 (HP Branded) not sure on speeds
AMD 6850 Graphics card
2 x RAID 0 SATA 7200 500GB disks on a generic raid controller PCIex1

I have got hold of a i5 2400 CPU so need a mobo for this, any recommendations, also a cooler as its out of a BTX mobo that was in a SFF case :(

also, a case suggestion would be nice.

also is it worth getting a SSD and keeping my 2 sata's for raw data/music/movies etc and installing games and the OS to the SSD?

budget for this is around £200...possible? coming from a HP mobo to anything capable of clocking will be nice!

any advice much appreciated

You say SFF case, is this the case it's going back into? What is the case you are using?

An ssd would be a great option. I love mine and so glad i got it.

Have you got the stock cooler for the 2400? If so, id use that.

I'm currently using a HP branded case, its very tight in there with the 6850 barely fitting and the raid card is practally touching with the CPU power cable stretched over the gfx card, not good.

the SFF case is what the i5 came out of, it has a BTX mobo so I cannot use that in any cases I can find.

the stock cooler for the 2400 is just a heatsink with no fan assembly, the fan assembly is integrated into the case and has a tunnel to the CPU heatsink, nice design but totally useless for moving to a full size ATX case.

I have priced up the following:

Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard with FREE 16GB USB 2.0 PEN £74.98
Samsung 64GB SSD 830 Desktop Series SATA 6Gb/s KIT with Norton Ghost - (MZ-7PC064D/EU) £53.99
Antec One Gaming Case - Black £44.99
Cooler Master Hyper TX3 Evo CPU Cooler (Socket Intel Socket LGA1366/1156/1155/775 / AMD Socket FM1/AM3+/AM3/AM2) £17.99

Sub Total : £159.95
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with: DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £10.50
Total : £204.54

Look ok?

the 2400 isn't clockable only the "K" models are, so you could save some money going for an H61 motherboard.

saving made on the mobo could give you enough to up the ssd to 128gb.

Problem with the H61 motherboards are they only seem to offer 2xDDR3 slots. my current memory is 4x2GB.

Guess I could buy 2x4GB but that just makes it the same price of getting the Z68 board.
