FF VII basic help with fighting

I'm sure someone will know this but i've searched high and wide for this on the net and can't find it anywhere...

How do you choose defend when fighting in FFVII? I'm trying to kill Midgar Zolom at the moment and I think defend may help, but I can't see to find it anywhere to select.

I've just had the flashback with Sepiroth and left Kalm.

Do you mean press left or right on the D-Pad?
 
I can get him down to about 600ish hp, but the only problem is when he hits Beta, Barrett or Tifa dies (one of them has usually been kicked out of the battle by now) and Cloud is left with 30 hp. MZ then attacks straight away again before I can use an Elixer.
 
oh! i thought you had to kill the monster to get the skill. I'll check this out when i get home :D
 
I've only got 1 ES Materia on me at the moment. Have I missed out on one somewhere?

Also lets say Cloud has the ES Skill with Beta in it. If he gives that materia to Tifa, does she then have the Beta skill?
 
The skill does look like it does a ridiculous amount of damage. Am i wrong in thinking for the next few battles i can just cast that first and i'm done?

Ah, i remembered the catch with Beta, it uses something silly like 75MP which at that point in the game is a huge chunk of your MP. So yeah it will kill nearly anything, but you only get to use it once per rest/ether.

that is if i can get the skill finally :p

I have no idea what that is but i'm looking forward to it.

The only thing i've heard about before, boss wise is Ruby and Emerald... something

Is there a lot of special stuff you can easily miss out on?
 
Sadly I can't :/ it's a challenge and it's a do-able (albeit difficult one) so i'll keep going till i go mental, or kill him. Whichever comes first
 
managed to get Beta :D

Instead of making Cloud my main guy with the elemental, fire and ES materia, i set it to Barrett. Then luckily i had him set to Defend after he got hit by beta so he went down to 200hp, then he survived the attack after, drank and elixer and beta'd back :D

I had a look at a guide for FFVII and i've not got loads of stuff that i should have got so far. There's a long range materia, some weapons and carbon bangles i was meant to steal.

What does Big Guard do?
 
I've got the High Wind now :D Anyone got any suggestions of where to go now? It seems the world is my oyster :o
 
Can anyone give me a clue on how to get a Blue Chocobo? I was under the impression that a Great Male + Good Female + Carab Nut = Blue Choco, but all I get is yellows or the odd Green Female :/
