Hi

Can someone recommend me a guide for setting up ffdshow to upscale DVDs in media player classic? I have a relatively powerful system (quad core) FYI.

Thanks

Copy these settings, but change the resolution to whatever yours is.

What codec pack are you using though?

I've tried VLC player, community codec pack, PowerDVD8 and Nvidia's PureVideo DVD decoder and none of these have made it look any better.

I too have a quad core setup and would like to see an increase in quality. Media player classic just crashes for me when watching a DVD...

ffdshow is the codec (well a collection of codecs i think)

you can get ffdshow on its own, but it also comes in k-lite codec pack i think

VLC media player has its codecs hard coded into it doesnt it so ffdshow wont work on that? I believe you can tell powerDVD and windows media player to use a certain codec when watching DVD's (in this case, telling it to use ffdshow)?

Uninstall any and all codec packs on your PC.

Install Media Player Classic Home Cinema, ffdshow tryouts and Haali Media Splitter.

You need nothing else!

Tried it all a while back, nothing made a normal AVI or DVD from PC to a 46" 1080p TV look any better.

Most upscaling Standalone DVD Players are also crap at it.

The only decent upscaling I've seen is done by the denon dvd, toshiba hd-dvd, and blu-ray (ps3) players. Everything else looks like it doesn't upscale, or when it is supposed to, it just makes a mess of the picture.

I've seen it done well but back then it cost a lot of cash for the Device to do it.

Basically a box like another DVD Player that has tons of connections to upscale video and upmix sound.

The high end one did 1080p and 7.1 and cost $1399 AFAIR, possibly now avail in UK.

I cant for life of me remember any brand but the word Gold in the top model.

ffdshow is very good actually, one of the best solutions you'll find. you just have to take the time to set it up. its better than my ps3, quite a bit better.

Can anyone briefly explain the role of avisynth in FFDShow. Is it used as an alternative (or in addition) to the other settings?

It's typically used to load specific AviSynth filters (e.g seesaw, tdeint etc) that you use in addition to the settings available in ffdshow. Someone realised that we can finally use some of these filters in realtime and added support.
