In news that is sure to rock the gaming world it has been confirmed that Final Fantasy XIII, the blockbuster RPG highly anticipated by millions of fans of the series, will not be an exclusive game for the PlayStation 3 console.

The Final Fantasy XIII project as of right now consists of two games for the PlayStation 3 as well as a mobile game. Motomu Toriyama of Square Enix has come out and made the confirmation that other consoles will be receiving Final Fantasy XIII on top of the PlayStation 3.

This is pretty big news and could lead to speculation as to which Final Fantasy XIII games are going where. The obvious rumors are going to be that FFXIII is heading to the Xbox 360 as well as the PlayStation 3.

This quote though could also mean that the series could be heading to the Nintendo DS handheld and or the Nintendo WII as well since Square Enix has been very impressed and pleased with the progression and installed user base of the Wii, with the DS already receiving the Final Fantasy treatment a few times.

Let the rumors begin. Either way though the fact that Final Fantasy XIII will not be a PS3-exclusive has to make any Sony fan cringe in their gaming chairs.

Another reason to get a PS3 down the drain for me.

As far as I'm aware there are a bunch of Final Fantasy 13 games coming out. Different games with FF13 as the main title, On different platforms. I personally think thats what the rumour is pointing at, or thats where it's spawned from.

Doesnt mean the main version of the game will be multiplatform, Just means all consoles will have a variation of FF13.

Why? It will still be on PS3!

Good news for 360 owners though (assuming that is where it is heading :))
I mean, lots of people were gonna buy a PS3 mainly because of FFXIII ;)

But now you may as well go for the 360, MGS4 is pretty much gonna be on 360 too so I have zero reasons to bother with the PS3, what a failure.

what a failure.

Gimme a break, It's comments like that that Murder Threads.

It doesnt say the main game will be coming to multiplatforms. Final Fantasy 13 is going to have sub games. Which means final fantasy can come to all consoles, all phones and all handhelds.

But nothing is set in stone, the game screenshots and movies we've been seeing could be PS3 only still.

I think it will go to the Wii, or maybe even it will be FFXIII Tactics or something.

All the 360 fanboys should just keep it in their pants for the time being.

it's funny when fanboys regard sony's games as crap ,then when they get released on 360 it bcomes "must have games"
A bit like the PS3 fans stating the XBox sucked because it was huge, ugly and heavy? ;)

People say things like this, like how the british whine when it's cold and when it's hot but they are pretty often completely different group of people. I am not a fan of FF but really want to play DMC. Multiformat for both games is great though :)

I'll refer everyone to my comment in the other thread

Yet another misreported article.

Toriyama said that the Final Fantasy XIII project (which includes the proper Final Fantasy XIII and a number of related but separate titles) is multiplatform. This is not news, it's always been known.

It's a bit like the compilation of FF7 project. That is a number of games based on FF7 all on different platforms. First there is Advent Children on DVD (ok not a game but it's part of it anyway), then there is Dirge of Cerberus on PS2, Crisis Core which is coming to PSP and Before Crisis which is out on mobile phones in Japan.

So each individual game will only be on a single platform, but each one will be on a different platform.

This is a case of the journalist misunderstanding what the developer said. I think it would be brilliant if FFXIII came to Xbox 360, it would save me a lot of money, but I don't think it's that likely unfortunately.

It's very likely. Not enough PS3s are being sold, simple as that. Square-Enix (who are cash strapped, and has been a little tight ever since Spirits Within) cannot break-even with it. The Xbox, due to its large sales base is ideal. That's why it has the support of many developers, and major publishers such as Ubisoft and EA. The development costs behind FFXIII must be phenomenal, unlike those lame mobile phone and PS2 FFVII rehashes.

You are clearly putting your head in the sand if you think major third party developers can just simply stick to one platform with adequete financial security.

I think they have recovered from that. After all since then they have merged with Enix, released FFX-2 (which was a financial success despite being crap) and FFXII and many other very successful games

But you have to remember that Japan is SE's main territory, and the Xbox still isn't that popular over there. It might get better though since Mist Walker are making Xbox games and I'm sure they will be very popular in Japan.

Good point. That is undeniably true.

I think it would make a lot of sense for them to release it multiplatform, but it's hard to predict what they'll do because multiplatform games aren't something they normally do. FFXI was an exception because it relies on having lots of players to be enjoyable. Apart from that the only multiplatform games came to other platforms much later than the original release (eg. PS1 ports of the old Snes games).

i heard its gunna be an xbox 540 excluse cos blu ray discs dont hold enough data

the next xbox is guna use 8 layer dual sided hd dvds and shizzle....

I have both ( will be getting an elite 360 to replace the premium ) and the last thing I would call the ps3 is ugly, I think it,s good looking piece of kit

Erm it's been hinted for ages that FFXIII wouldn't be an exclusive, so it's not a misunderstanding really at all.

This hints towards it;

Skyrocketing development costs and disappointment with the PS3. In recent Gamespot interviews with the president of Sony Computer Entertainment France and Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, these were the reasons given why Final Fantasy XIII may be heading to the Xbox 360.

Sony France executive says in interview that Square Enix's latest installment may not be exclusive to the console after all.

One more platform-exclusive title may be going multiplatform, it has been revealed. The latest news appears to be that Square Enix's latest epic role-playing game, Final Fantasy XIII, may follow other titles--including Saints Row, Assassin's Creed, and Devil May Cry 4--that have now been announced as appearing on at least one other platform as well.

Sony Computer Entertainment France president Georges Fornay dropped the bombshell in an interview with French-language newspaper Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace (subscription required). He said, "The development costs of games have exploded, and it has become more difficult to have exclusives, outside of our own games. But we have for launch day [in France] 30 games, including MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Virtua Fighter 5. Moreover, we are expecting 200 games [for the PS3] by the end of 2007...As far as Final Fantasy XIII goes, I can tell you that the exclusivity is in discussion."
