Was just reading on Wikipedia the game is on an indefinite free trial period until they have done all the updates and they are happy with the state of the game.

Can anyone confirm this is true and is anyone still playing?

For all it's faults I did rather enjoy the game.

Thanks

No sub but you do have to buy it, it is free until they decide it is 'fixed' whenever that will be. I went back to it recently and it has been improved MASSIVELY, but that doesn't mean it's good. They have fleshed out the content with quests and continue to add more, there was a decent event running as well., but it's still very lacking elsewhere

The social interaction is still COMPLETELY non existant, no one talks, it feels like a single player game without all the good points of single player games (story). The UI remains cumbersome, there has been no changes to the combat, dungeons are coming but wont help on their own.

The new devs seem to be enthusiastically taking the game in the right direction, I think the basis is there for it to be very good in a year or two, but it has no story at all, and right now does simply feel like a mindless grind to a max level with absolutely nothing to do once you are there.

Still plenty of people playing though.

much appreciated.

If it's free I may pop on and see how it's changed.

Is the lag still dire? That's was the final straw for me which made ne eventually quit, could hardly play due to the obscene lag.

The UI doesn't lag, but you can clearly see there is a delay between windows opening, I don't think it is lag it's just really poor design, it was obviously designed for a controller/console where you wouldn't really notice, but with a mouse, your cursor is generally there half a second before the window and it makes it feel awfully slow.

I was talking general game lag. With servers in Japan at busy times I was walking past a mob to a camp, get to the camp and stop then suddenly be teleported halfway back across the map to be left dead because sone mob had been killing me the whole time and the game had decided not to let me know

I never noticed, their ping thing seemed to be saying 40ish, but I havn't actually tried to work it out tbh. I certainly wouldnt call lag the game breaking issue from what I played.

I played with my wireless 360 pad and believe me it's noticeable!

the lag in game has got a hell of a lot better since release. menu access is still sluggish compared to other MMOs as nearly everything is still done server-side.

if anyone's planning to give this game another shot, do so in mid june as a very large patch is scheduled for release then. They're pretty much scrapping the battle system as it is and starting again from the ground up, lots of very exciting changes in store and I really feel this game is on the mend and will eventually be as good as ffxi was if not better.

I'll probably give this another shot after summer then. I was in the closed beta, but didn't have the hardware to run it at the time. Don't think I missed much to be honest. :P

I couldn't remember my account details and SE were worse than useless helping me recover them so i'm not bothering anymore. ho hum :p

Lets pretend for one moment that FF XIV is a free to play mmo or pay once mmo.

How does it stack up to other mmo's such as LOTRO, DDO and Champions Online?

Just wondering as I like the f2p/one payment idea but if its not worth spending time on then I wont bother with it.

Is it possible to download a trial as there isnt one on the official site.

They'll definitely reintroduce the fee. There's two big patches planned... 1.18 in mid june and 1.19 i guess july/august. General consensus is they'll start charging @ PS3 launch when the game will hopefully get a second chance in the eye of the public.

Eames, you can most likely find someone to give you their buddy pass if you ask on any of the fan forums. ive used mine sadly but the buddy pass is basically a free copy of the game.

As for the style of this game... those that played ffxi know that SE really don't make conventional MMOs. It is very different to wow and the MMO norm. It doesn't help that its vision hasnt been realised because it was a steaming pile of **** at launch but regardless of that its still an acquired taste, and will be even when all the problems have been ironed out.

The game is ok with a decent guild, I wouldn't recommend playing solo as party play really is the only viable way of reaching cap. You basically have a load of hardcorers and ffxi veterans playing the game now and getting most jobs to max in the hope that the game will become as good as ffxi was.

Gave up with this after the servers were taken down due to the earthquake. Might pick it up again when i move house. Can be brought for less than £5 from a few places.
