I remember buying FHM many moons ago and enjoying it very much so. In a conversation with friends (girls mainly) they were very vocal about their dislike of FHM, saying its a 'cheap and nasty' magazine. Even then, my male friends seemed to think it was a waste of space as well, making it out to be full of dross ala 'nuts' / 'zoo'. I argued rather fiercely back that it was actually a very good magazine, filled with light hearted humour, gadgets, silly stories, fashion and ladies, all in digestable amounts. To confirm this, I went out and bought it this month.

What can I say - what a great fun read. Obviously not a novel (so it shouldn't be treated as such), its an entertaining an all encompassing magazine which I feel has a huge unfair stigma against it. All things of interest to men are covered, but not in a sleazy cheap way. The fashion section is brief but decent, features are broad (for example, the pull out feature this month was on how to save money). The interviews were great, such as a new series on 'straight to dvd heros' where one of them goes toe to toe with Ivan Drago from Rocky IV (!!!).

The articals were interesting (Such as the one on animal cruelty), the humour was generally tasteful and easy to read (such as the one on pirates, or things with 'design flaws' such as plastic spatulas or terminator 2). Lasty, the girl pages (one or two interviews with a model over several pages) make for good eyecandy witout being overly distasteful.

I will certainly be buying it frequently now having been very impressed with this issue. Its unfairly placed with other magazines such as 'zoo' and I find it highly hypocritical that females slate it when they will sit there reading 'Cosmopoliton', the worlds most sex crazed non pornographic magazine.

So what do you lot think of it? Is it a good read? Do you dislike it? Are there other similar magazines which you think are better?

(On a side note (semi-unrelated), anything from 'Paragon Publishing' is guaranteed to be a great read, eg Total Film or Total Guitar since they never read pompously and weve humour and the subject matter very well. I would recommend either of those above to anyone.)

I'd much rather read the mags off the very top shelf. FHM are just for boys or those "testing the water" with their gfs to see what they can and can't get away with at home.

:p
Thats exactly the rubbish I was talking about. Its just so unfair to lable FHM like that when its so much more. I realise I may have missed the sarcasm if any :D

I didn't find the adverts too bad.

But then I don't like Hollyoaks, indie music, football or cars either. :)
Nor do I. There was a section on 'football in the future' and a page on classic cars, which are both unread as yet.

FHM, Zoo, Nuts et al are are mindless drivel.
I get the impression you have never read it then.

Its currently the most read magazine in the house (of 3 girls and 2 boys). The girls have since given their approval.

Nuts&Zoo were also full of the exact same content??
Zoo and Nuts are aimed at the 'lager lad culture', whilst FHM is not. For the record, Nuts and Zoo are fairly vile.

I had a browse again and I think the advert criticism is very fair. I would guess on average 1 in 5/6 pages is an advert, which is obviously a lot. It wouldn't prevent me from buying it again, but I totally understand such reasoning for disliking it.
