The FIA is planning to introduce a 'pole position trophy' in Formula 1 from the start of next year, after receiving preliminary support for the idea from teams. If it comes into force, the trophy will be awarded to the driver who secures the most pole positions during the championship season.

Formula 1 teams are pushing ahead with a plan to give drivers permanent numbers throughout their racing careers, AUTOSPORT has learned.

..

Having been first debated at the previous Strategy Group meeting that took place in October, and received a largely positive response, the matter will be talked about further at the next meeting in a bid to finalise its implementation.

Well, they have a DHL fastest lap award already, and teams have kept numbers for several years in the past. Perhaps they can have a "Miss DHL" hand the P1 trophy to Vettel and interview him :p

Numbers could be an improvement, though the cynic in me suspects they're partly keen on doing it so people are less worried about merchandise looking out of date after a single season and buy more of it.

I'm sure they've got more important / interesting things they could be discussing than pointless trophies and what number everybody gets though.

re: the number thing. I'd like to see it return to the pre-'96 system when teams, unless their driver was the current champion, held onto certain numbers for years. If only to see a Ferrari #27 and #28 take to the track again :)

Personally I have always liked the idea of a No1 being given to the Champion from the previous year , to have permanently assigned numbers just another un-necessary change by the FIA imo

Ferrari especially, but also Red 5. I might be a bit of a nostalgia freak, but it leant that little bit more romance into a sport which is becoming increasingly cold and methodical.

The car that qualifies on pole most usually wins the championship, so it just seems like an unnecessary trophy.

It's not like people will jeopardize their race setups just to get some mickey mouse pole trophy.

I've thought there should be points for qually for a while. Don't like the idea of a qually trophy.
I think fastest lap would be better. It's more likely to be spread around a bit.

If the race has stagnated a bit you could have people trying to rag out a fast one at the end on light fuel or a lower team that's out of the points diving in to the pits for new tyres to nick championship points.

A trophy? What's the point in that?

Points, that's something else. But you can't really do that and keep parc ferme and the retarded qualifying tyre rules.
